Can you get pregnant immediately after stopping the use of emergency contraception?

Hello doctor, I have been taking oral contraceptive pills on schedule for almost six months.
However, I forgot to take the pills for two consecutive days, so I decided to stop taking them and wait for the next cycle to continue.
On the fourth day after stopping the pills, I had sexual intercourse and ejaculation occurred (I had taken five pills before stopping).
I would like to know if there is a chance of pregnancy in this situation.
Thank you.

Gao, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2023/01/05

Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, based on your description, this cycle no longer has contraceptive effectiveness.
It is best to use emergency contraception, but its effectiveness is not 100%, with a failure rate of about 3%.
If your period is more than a week late, it is still advisable to check for pregnancy.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health.

When it comes to the question of whether you can get pregnant immediately after stopping birth control pills, the answer is yes, there is a possibility of becoming pregnant right after discontinuing the pills. Birth control pills work primarily by preventing ovulation, and once you stop taking them, your body can return to its natural cycle quite quickly.
In your case, since you have been taking the pills consistently for about six months, your body has likely adjusted to the hormonal regulation provided by the pills. However, when you missed two doses and then stopped taking the pills altogether, your hormone levels may have started to fluctuate. This fluctuation can lead to the possibility of ovulation occurring sooner than expected.
The timing of ovulation varies from person to person, but it generally occurs about 14 days before the start of your next menstrual period. If you had unprotected intercourse on the fourth day after stopping the pills, and if your body was preparing to ovulate, there is a chance that sperm could fertilize an egg if ovulation occurred shortly after you stopped taking the pills.

It's important to note that sperm can live inside the female reproductive tract for up to five days, so if you ovulate within that timeframe, the likelihood of pregnancy increases. If you are concerned about the possibility of pregnancy, it may be advisable to take a home pregnancy test if your next period is late, or consult with your healthcare provider for further guidance.

In terms of family planning, if you are not ready for pregnancy, it is crucial to consider alternative contraceptive methods immediately after stopping the pills. Barrier methods, such as condoms, can provide protection against unintended pregnancy during this transition period. Additionally, if you are planning to conceive, it may be beneficial to track your ovulation cycle to better understand your fertile window.

Lastly, if you have any concerns about your menstrual cycle or reproductive health after stopping the pills, it is always a good idea to consult with your healthcare provider. They can provide personalized advice based on your medical history and current health status.
In summary, while it is possible to become pregnant immediately after stopping birth control pills, the likelihood depends on various factors, including your individual cycle and timing of ovulation. If you are considering pregnancy or wish to avoid it, understanding your body’s signals and consulting with a healthcare professional can help you make informed decisions.
