Brown discharge during ovulation, unprotected sexual activity during the safe period?

Hello doctor, my last menstrual period was from December 3 to December 10 (it was completely finished).
Then around December 19, I experienced brown discharge, which lasted for about 7 days and was heavy enough on some days to stain my panty liner.
I had sexual intercourse on December 30, 31, and January 2, initially without a condom, and then I put one on later.
My usual menstrual cycle is 32 to 37 days.
Now it's the 38th day and I haven't gotten my period yet.
Could this be a sign of pregnancy, or could the previous ovulation bleeding be causing the delay?

C, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2023/01/09

Hello! It is recommended to practice safe sex to reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections, as well as to prevent unintended pregnancies.
Please monitor your menstrual cycle, and if there is a delay, you can take a home pregnancy test or visit a gynecologist for confirmation.
Thank you.

When it comes to concerns regarding brown discharge and a delayed period, it's important to consider several factors that could contribute to these symptoms. Based on your description, you experienced brown discharge around December 19, which lasted for about seven days, and now you are on day 38 of your cycle without a menstrual period.
Firstly, brown discharge can often be a sign of old blood leaving the body, which may occur at the beginning or end of a menstrual period. However, in the context of a delayed period, it could also indicate other possibilities, including implantation bleeding if you are pregnant. Implantation bleeding typically occurs when a fertilized egg attaches to the lining of the uterus, and it can sometimes be mistaken for a light period or spotting.
Given that you have had unprotected intercourse around the time of your ovulation (assuming a typical cycle), there is a possibility of pregnancy. The average menstrual cycle can vary significantly from person to person, and since you mentioned your cycles typically range from 32 to 37 days, a delay could be indicative of pregnancy or other factors such as hormonal imbalances or stress.

To determine if you are pregnant, the most reliable method is to take a home pregnancy test. These tests are designed to detect the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) in your urine, which is produced shortly after a fertilized egg attaches to the uterus. If the test is positive, it would confirm pregnancy, while a negative result may suggest that your period is simply delayed for other reasons.

If you continue to experience unusual symptoms, such as persistent brown discharge, abdominal pain, or any other concerning signs, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare provider. They can perform a more thorough evaluation, including a blood test for pregnancy and possibly an ultrasound, to assess your reproductive health.

In summary, while brown discharge and a delayed period can be concerning, they are not uncommon and can result from various factors. Taking a pregnancy test and consulting with a healthcare professional will provide clarity and help address any underlying issues. It's essential to listen to your body and seek medical advice if you have any doubts or persistent symptoms.
