My stomach growls at night?
Hello doctor, a few weeks ago, one night while I was sleeping, I suddenly noticed a continuous rumbling sound in my abdomen (it was most noticeable while I was asleep).
This has persisted until now; during the day, there isn't much noise, but occasionally there is a loud sound.
I haven't experienced any other unusual symptoms, and my bowel movements are quite normal.
I would like to know if this could be caused by my daily consumption of cabbage, and whether I need to seek medical attention.

The sounds of food digestion and peristalsis are more pronounced (fruits and vegetables also promote peristalsis more easily), which is harmless.

Stomach growling, also known as borborygmi, is a common phenomenon that occurs when the digestive system is active. It can happen at any time, but many people notice it more at night or when they are quiet, such as when they are lying down to sleep. This sound is primarily caused by the movement of gas and fluids in the intestines as they contract and push contents through the digestive tract.
In your case, the fact that you are experiencing these sounds primarily at night and that they have been persistent for several weeks suggests that your digestive system is quite active during those times. This can be influenced by various factors, including your diet, the timing of your meals, and even your body's natural circadian rhythms.
You mentioned that you consume a lot of cabbage. Cabbage is a cruciferous vegetable that is known to be high in fiber and can cause increased gas production in some individuals. This is due to the fermentation process that occurs in the intestines when fiber is broken down by bacteria. If you are eating cabbage frequently, it could indeed contribute to the sounds you are hearing, especially if your body is not accustomed to high-fiber foods.
However, it is important to note that stomach growling is typically a normal physiological response and does not necessarily indicate a health problem, especially if you are not experiencing other symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea, or constipation. The absence of these symptoms suggests that your digestive system is functioning normally, and the sounds are likely just a result of normal digestive processes.
If the sounds are bothersome or if you start to experience other gastrointestinal symptoms, it may be worth consulting with a healthcare professional. They can help determine if there is an underlying issue that needs to be addressed. In the meantime, you might consider moderating your intake of cabbage and other high-fiber foods to see if that helps reduce the frequency and volume of the sounds. Additionally, ensuring that you are well-hydrated and eating smaller, more frequent meals can also aid digestion and potentially reduce excessive gas production.
In summary, while stomach growling at night can be annoying, it is usually not a cause for concern, especially if you are otherwise healthy. Monitoring your diet and making some adjustments may help alleviate the sounds. If you have any doubts or if your symptoms change, do not hesitate to seek medical advice.
