Does handwashing reduce the risk of infection?

Hello doctor, I have severe obsessive-compulsive disorder regarding cleanliness.
I would like to ask if washing my hands before using the restroom will reduce the risk of infection.
Sometimes my hands are very dirty, as I might pick things up from the floor or come into contact with other objects, and I always feel that using hand soap does not give me a sense of security in terms of cleanliness.

More Info

Handwashing is a fundamental practice in maintaining personal hygiene and significantly reduces the risk of infections. Your concern about washing your hands before using the restroom is valid, especially considering your experiences with cleanliness and the potential for contamination from various surfaces.
To address your question directly: Yes, washing your hands before using the restroom can indeed lower the risk of infection. The act of washing hands helps to remove dirt, bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens that may be present on your hands. This is particularly important if you have touched potentially contaminated surfaces or objects, such as those found on the floor or in public spaces.
When you wash your hands with soap and water, you effectively disrupt the structure of the germs, allowing them to be rinsed away. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) emphasizes that proper handwashing involves scrubbing all parts of the hands, including the backs, between fingers, and under nails, for at least 20 seconds. This thorough approach ensures that most pathogens are eliminated, significantly reducing the likelihood of transferring germs to your face or food, or spreading them to others.

In your case, since you mentioned that your hands can sometimes feel very dirty, it's crucial to wash them not only before using the restroom but also after handling items that may be contaminated. If you have a small wound on your hand, it is even more important to maintain good hand hygiene, as open wounds can be entry points for bacteria and other pathogens.
Using hand sanitizer can be an effective alternative when soap and water are not available, but it is important to note that hand sanitizers are not a substitute for handwashing, especially when hands are visibly dirty or greasy. If you are concerned about the effectiveness of handwashing, consider using an antibacterial soap, which can provide an additional layer of protection against germs.

Furthermore, your feelings of unease regarding cleanliness are understandable, especially if you have a tendency towards obsessive cleanliness. While it is good to maintain high hygiene standards, it is also important to find a balance to avoid excessive anxiety. If you find that your concerns about cleanliness are impacting your daily life, it may be beneficial to speak with a healthcare professional or a mental health expert who can provide support and strategies to manage these feelings.

In summary, washing your hands before using the restroom is an effective way to reduce the risk of infection. It is essential to practice thorough handwashing techniques and to be mindful of hygiene in various situations. If you have any further concerns about your health or hygiene practices, do not hesitate to consult with a healthcare professional for personalized advice.
