Height issues
Hello doctor, I am currently 17 years old and my height is 170 cm, but my upper body is quite short, similar in length to my 160 cm tall mother.
I would like to know if my upper body can still grow taller.
Thank you, doctor.

At 17 years old, the potential for further height growth is largely determined by the status of your growth plates, which are areas of developing cartilage tissue near the ends of long bones. These growth plates gradually close as you progress through puberty, and once they are closed, no further growth in height is possible.
Typically, for males, growth plates begin to close around the ages of 16 to 18, but this can vary based on individual factors such as genetics, nutrition, and overall health. If you have not had an X-ray to assess the status of your growth plates, it would be advisable to consult with an orthopedic specialist. They can provide a definitive answer regarding whether your growth plates are still open and if you have any remaining potential for height increase.
In your case, you mentioned that your height is 170 cm, and you feel that your upper body appears shorter compared to your height. This perception can sometimes be influenced by body proportions, which vary widely among individuals. Some people may have longer legs relative to their torso, while others may have a more balanced proportion.
To address your concerns about growth, here are some important factors to consider:
1. Genetics: Your height is significantly influenced by your family history. If your parents are shorter, it is likely that you may not reach a height much taller than theirs. However, there are always exceptions, and some individuals do surpass their parents' heights.
2. Nutrition: A balanced diet rich in essential nutrients, particularly protein, calcium, and vitamins D and K, is crucial for growth. These nutrients support bone health and development. Ensure you are consuming a variety of foods, including dairy products, lean meats, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
3. Exercise: Regular physical activity, especially weight-bearing exercises and sports like basketball, can promote healthy bone growth and overall fitness. While exercise alone may not significantly increase height, it contributes to better posture and muscle development, which can enhance your overall appearance.
4. Sleep: Adequate sleep is vital for growth, particularly during adolescence. Growth hormone, which plays a key role in height increase, is primarily released during deep sleep. Aim for 8-10 hours of quality sleep each night.
5. Posture: Sometimes, perceived height can be affected by posture. Maintaining good posture can make you appear taller and more confident. Engaging in exercises that strengthen your core and back muscles can help improve your posture.
6. Consultation with a Specialist: If you are concerned about your growth and body proportions, consider consulting with an orthopedic specialist or an endocrinologist. They can evaluate your growth plates through imaging studies and provide personalized advice based on your individual circumstances.
In summary, while there may still be a small chance for some growth if your growth plates are not fully closed, it is essential to focus on overall health and well-being. Embrace your unique body proportions, and remember that height is just one aspect of who you are. Prioritize a healthy lifestyle, and you will be setting yourself up for success in many areas beyond just height.
