Vaginal discharge infection and inflammation?
Hello, doctor! At first, my discharge was a bit white and yellow-green, resembling cottage cheese, and it had a slight odor.
I experienced itching in the vagina and some pain while urinating.
However, after about 6 or 7 days, the discharge turned a bit brown, still resembling cottage cheese, and the odor became stronger than before.
I continued to have vaginal pain and itching, along with slight pain during urination.
I did some research online, and my symptoms seem to resemble trichomoniasis, but I haven't had sexual intercourse, nor have I gone swimming or anything like that.
I would like to ask what this condition might be.

Dr. Li Xinyi reply Urology
It appears that there is a case of vaginitis.
It is recommended to visit a gynecologist for a thorough examination and to discuss it with the physician.

More Info
Understanding vaginal discharge infections is crucial for identifying underlying health issues and seeking appropriate treatment. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing symptoms that could be indicative of a vaginal infection, possibly a yeast infection or bacterial vaginosis, but there is also a chance of trichomoniasis, especially given the characteristics of your discharge.
Symptoms and Possible Causes
1. Discharge Characteristics:
- The initial white or yellow-green discharge that resembles "tofu" is often associated with a yeast infection (candidiasis) or bacterial vaginosis. Yeast infections typically produce a thick, white, clumpy discharge, while bacterial vaginosis can lead to a thin, grayish discharge with a fishy odor.
- The subsequent change to a brown discharge could indicate old blood, which may occur after menstruation or due to irritation or inflammation in the vaginal area.
2. Itching and Pain:
- Itching in the vaginal area is a common symptom of yeast infections, while pain during urination can be a sign of irritation or inflammation, possibly due to a urinary tract infection (UTI) or vaginitis.
- The presence of pain during urination alongside vaginal symptoms suggests that there may be an overlap between a vaginal infection and a urinary tract infection.
3. Trichomoniasis:
- Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the parasite Trichomonas vaginalis. It can cause a frothy, yellow-green discharge with a strong odor, itching, and discomfort during urination. However, it is important to note that trichomoniasis can also be transmitted through non-sexual means, such as shared towels or bathing suits, although this is less common.
Recommended Actions
1. Seek Medical Evaluation:
- It is essential to consult a healthcare provider for a thorough examination. A gynecologist can perform a pelvic exam and take samples of the discharge for laboratory analysis. This will help in accurately diagnosing the condition and determining the appropriate treatment.
2. Testing for STIs:
- Even if you have not engaged in sexual activity recently, it is prudent to discuss STI testing with your healthcare provider. Some infections can remain dormant or be asymptomatic for a period.
3. Treatment Options:
- Depending on the diagnosis, treatment may include antifungal medications for yeast infections, antibiotics for bacterial vaginosis or trichomoniasis, and possibly medications for any urinary tract infections.
4. Self-Care Measures:
- In the meantime, maintain good hygiene by keeping the vaginal area clean and dry. Avoid using scented soaps, douches, or other irritants that could exacerbate the symptoms. Wearing breathable cotton underwear can also help.
5. Monitor Symptoms:
- Keep track of any changes in your symptoms, including the color, consistency, and odor of the discharge, as well as any new symptoms that may arise. This information will be valuable for your healthcare provider.
Conclusion
In summary, your symptoms suggest a possible vaginal infection that requires medical evaluation for proper diagnosis and treatment. While online resources can provide some insight, they cannot replace professional medical advice. It is important to address these symptoms promptly to prevent complications and ensure your overall reproductive health.
