Inguinal mass
Hello doctor, around January 10th, I noticed a lump in my right groin area while taking a shower.
It is about 1.5 to 2 cm in size, painful when pressed, movable, and feels rubbery to the touch.
I saw a general surgeon today, who mentioned that it could possibly be lymphadenopathy caused by a wound infection.
Is it possible that this is due to a wound caused by scratching my eczema previously? Thank you for your help.

More Info
Understanding groin lumps can be a concerning experience, especially when you discover a lump in a sensitive area like the groin. The lump you described, approximately 1.5-2 cm in size, movable, rubbery in texture, and painful upon pressure, raises several possibilities regarding its cause.
Possible Causes of Groin Lumps
1. Lymphadenopathy: The most common cause of a lump in the groin area is swollen lymph nodes, known as lymphadenopathy. This can occur due to infections, inflammation, or malignancies. In your case, the lump could be a swollen lymph node reacting to an infection, possibly due to the skin irritation or infection from your eczema.
2. Infection: If you have a history of eczema and have scratched the area, it is plausible that you could have introduced bacteria into the skin, leading to a localized infection. This can cause the lymph nodes in the groin to swell as they work to fight off the infection.
3. Hernia: Another possibility is an inguinal hernia, where tissue protrudes through a weak spot in the abdominal muscles. Hernias can sometimes present as a lump in the groin, especially when straining or lifting.
4. Sebaceous Cyst: These are non-cancerous lumps that can occur when a sebaceous gland becomes blocked. They are typically movable and can be tender if inflamed.
5. Lipoma: A lipoma is a benign tumor made of fat tissue. They are usually soft, movable, and painless, but can sometimes become tender if they press on surrounding tissues.
6. Other Causes: Less commonly, groin lumps can be caused by conditions such as testicular torsion, varicocele, or even malignancies, which would require further investigation.
Symptoms to Monitor
- Pain: If the lump becomes increasingly painful or if you experience significant discomfort, this could indicate a more serious issue.
- Size Changes: If the lump grows larger or changes in consistency, it is essential to seek medical advice.
- Systemic Symptoms: Fever, chills, or other systemic symptoms could indicate an infection that needs immediate attention.
When to Seek Help
You should seek medical attention if:
- The lump persists for more than a couple of weeks without improvement.
- You develop fever or other systemic symptoms.
- The lump increases in size or changes in texture.
- You experience significant pain or discomfort.
Conclusion
Given your history of eczema and the possibility of scratching leading to an infection, it is reasonable to consider that the lump may be related to lymphadenopathy due to an infection. However, it is crucial to follow up with your healthcare provider for a thorough examination and possibly imaging studies or further tests to rule out other causes. They may recommend monitoring the lump, treating any underlying infection, or referring you to a specialist if necessary. Always prioritize your health and do not hesitate to seek further medical advice if your symptoms change or worsen.
