Blurred Vision in One Eye: Causes and Concerns - Ophthalmology

Unilateral blurred vision?

Hello, doctor.
In the past two days, I have noticed that one eye has blurred vision and diplopia.
When I am not wearing my glasses, I see light spreading out in a circular pattern.
The other eye is normal.
I currently have elevated intraocular pressure and am using eye drops to control it.
I would like to know if the symptoms mentioned above could be related to high intraocular pressure or if they might be side effects of the eye drops.
Thank you, doctor.

Hello: If you have elevated intraocular pressure along with blurred vision in one eye, double vision, and light appearing to scatter in a circular pattern, this may be due to corneal edema caused by high eye pressure.
It is advisable to seek medical attention promptly for an examination.

Hello! Thank you for reaching out with your concerns regarding the blurred vision and diplopia (double vision) you are experiencing in one eye. Based on your description, there are several potential causes for these symptoms, and I will outline them below, along with some additional insights into the relationship between high intraocular pressure (IOP) and your current situation.

1. High Intraocular Pressure (IOP): Elevated IOP can lead to various visual disturbances, including blurred vision and halos around lights. This is particularly relevant in the context of glaucoma, where prolonged high pressure can damage the optic nerve. If you have been diagnosed with high IOP and are using eye drops to manage it, it is essential to monitor any changes in your vision closely. While the eye drops are intended to lower IOP, they can sometimes cause temporary visual disturbances as a side effect.

2. Corneal Issues: The phenomenon of seeing light as a halo or circular pattern can also be associated with corneal irregularities or edema (swelling). Conditions such as keratoconus or corneal dystrophies can lead to distorted vision. If your cornea is affected, it may scatter light, causing the visual distortions you describe.

3. Optic Nerve or Retinal Issues: Blurred vision in one eye can also indicate problems with the optic nerve or retina. Conditions such as optic neuritis, retinal detachment, or macular degeneration can lead to these symptoms. Given your history of high IOP, it is crucial to rule out any optic nerve damage.

4. Refractive Errors: If you have not had a recent eye exam, it is possible that your prescription has changed, leading to blurred vision. Regular check-ups are essential, especially if you notice sudden changes in your vision.

5. Medication Side Effects: The eye drops you are using to control your IOP may have side effects that include blurred vision or visual disturbances. It is important to discuss any new symptoms with your eye care provider, as they may need to adjust your medication.

6. Other Factors: Stress, fatigue, and prolonged screen time can also contribute to visual disturbances. If you have been experiencing increased stress or have been using digital devices more frequently, this could exacerbate your symptoms.

Recommendations:
- Immediate Eye Examination: Given the sudden onset of these symptoms, it is advisable to schedule an appointment with your eye care professional as soon as possible. They can perform a comprehensive eye exam, including checking your IOP, assessing your optic nerve, and evaluating your retina.

- Monitor Symptoms: Keep a record of when the symptoms occur, their duration, and any other accompanying symptoms (such as headaches or eye pain). This information can be valuable for your eye doctor.

- Discuss Medications: Bring up your current eye drops and any other medications you are taking with your doctor. They can determine if your symptoms may be related to your treatment regimen.

- Lifestyle Adjustments: Ensure you are taking regular breaks from screens and practicing good eye hygiene. Staying hydrated and managing stress can also help alleviate some visual discomfort.

In conclusion, while high IOP can contribute to visual disturbances, it is essential to consider a comprehensive evaluation to determine the exact cause of your symptoms. Early intervention is key to preventing potential complications, especially given your history of elevated eye pressure. Please do not hesitate to seek medical attention promptly. Your vision is invaluable, and addressing these concerns early can help maintain your eye health.
