Will menstrual induction medications cause pregnancy?

My last menstrual period was on December 12, 2022, and I haven't had one since then.
I had unprotected intercourse on December 17.
After a delay in early January, I took two home pregnancy tests, and this morning I went to the obstetrics and gynecology department for a pregnancy test and ultrasound, both of which showed no pregnancy.
The doctor prescribed me Estrofem 2 mg, but I forgot to ask a question, so I would like to inquire here: If I had unprotected intercourse on January 28, will taking the medication to induce menstruation increase the chances of pregnancy? If I do not wish to become pregnant, would you still recommend using contraception?

Han, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2023/01/30

Dr. Chen Zhiyu reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello! It is recommended to practice safe sex to reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections, while also preventing unintended pregnancies.
Please monitor your menstrual cycle, and if there is a delay, you can take a home pregnancy test or visit a gynecologist for confirmation.
Thank you!

Menstrual induction pills, such as those containing estrogen or progesterone, are often prescribed to help regulate menstrual cycles or induce menstruation in women who have irregular periods. However, their role in increasing the chances of pregnancy is not straightforward and can vary based on individual circumstances.

When you take menstrual induction pills, they can help to initiate a menstrual cycle if you have missed your period. This can be beneficial for women who are trying to conceive, as a regular menstrual cycle is often a sign of ovulation, which is necessary for pregnancy. However, the pills themselves do not directly increase the likelihood of conception. Instead, they can help create a more predictable cycle, which may make it easier to identify fertile windows.

In your case, since you have had unprotected intercourse on multiple occasions and have taken menstrual induction pills, it is essential to understand how these factors interact. If the pills induce a period, it may signal that your body is preparing for a new cycle, which could lead to ovulation and potentially increase your chances of conceiving in subsequent cycles. However, if you are currently not pregnant and are concerned about the possibility of becoming pregnant after taking the pills, it is crucial to consider the timing of your unprotected intercourse relative to your ovulation.

If you are actively trying to avoid pregnancy, relying solely on menstrual induction pills is not advisable. While these pills can help regulate your cycle, they do not provide contraception. If you have had unprotected intercourse and are concerned about pregnancy, it is recommended to use a reliable form of contraception, such as condoms or hormonal birth control, to prevent unintended pregnancy.

Additionally, if you are experiencing irregular periods or have concerns about your menstrual health, it is essential to discuss these issues with your healthcare provider. They can provide personalized advice based on your medical history and current health status. They may also recommend further evaluation to determine the underlying causes of your irregular cycles, which could include hormonal imbalances, stress, or other health conditions.

In summary, while menstrual induction pills can help regulate your menstrual cycle, they do not directly increase your chances of pregnancy. If you are trying to avoid pregnancy, it is best to use effective contraception. If you have further questions or concerns about your reproductive health, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for guidance. They can help you navigate your options and make informed decisions regarding your reproductive health.
