Menstrual delay
Hello, Doctor! I usually have a regular menstrual cycle, with my period arriving at the end of the month.
My last period was on December 20, but it hasn't come yet.
I had sexual intercourse in early January, and when my period was a week late, I took a pregnancy test, which came back negative.
I've also been experiencing discharge consistently; it started with egg white consistency but then became less stretchy before returning to egg white consistency again.
Could this indicate some sort of discharge imbalance? Additionally, I took Curam 1000mg for a week in mid-January due to tonsillitis; could that be a factor?

Hello, it seems you are not pregnant.
If your period does not arrive in another week, it is advisable to see a gynecologist.
Wishing you good health.

Delayed menstruation can be a source of concern for many women, especially when their menstrual cycles have been regular in the past. In your case, with a history of a consistent cycle and a recent delay of over a week, it’s understandable to seek clarity on the potential causes and implications.
Firstly, it’s important to note that menstrual cycles can be influenced by a variety of factors, including hormonal fluctuations, stress, illness, and lifestyle changes. The average menstrual cycle ranges from 21 to 35 days, and variations can occur due to numerous reasons. Given that your last menstrual period was on December 20, and you have not seen any signs of menstruation since then, it is reasonable to consider several possibilities.
1. Pregnancy: Although you mentioned that you had a negative pregnancy test after a week of delay, it’s worth noting that testing too early can sometimes yield false negatives. If you had unprotected intercourse, it may be advisable to retest a few days later, especially if your period does not arrive.
2. Hormonal Imbalance: Hormonal fluctuations are a common cause of delayed menstruation. Factors such as stress, significant weight changes, or changes in physical activity can disrupt the delicate balance of hormones that regulate your menstrual cycle. In your case, the recent illness (tonsillitis) and the antibiotic treatment (Curam) may also have played a role. While antibiotics are not typically known to directly affect menstrual cycles, they can influence gut health and hormonal balance indirectly.
3. Stress and Lifestyle Factors: Emotional and physical stress can significantly impact your menstrual cycle. If you have been experiencing increased stress or changes in your daily routine, this could contribute to a delay. Additionally, factors such as sleep disturbances, diet changes, or excessive exercise can also lead to irregularities.
4. Medical Conditions: Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, or other hormonal disorders can lead to delayed menstruation. If you continue to experience irregularities, it may be beneficial to consult a healthcare provider for further evaluation.
Regarding your observation of changes in cervical mucus, it is normal for the consistency and appearance of cervical mucus to vary throughout the menstrual cycle. The presence of egg white-like mucus typically indicates ovulation, while other changes can occur due to hormonal fluctuations. If you notice persistent changes or discomfort, it may warrant further investigation.
In conclusion, while a delayed period can be concerning, it is often not indicative of a serious issue, especially if it is a one-time occurrence. However, if your period does not return within a few weeks, or if you experience other concerning symptoms (such as severe pain, unusual discharge, or significant changes in your health), it is advisable to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include blood tests to check hormone levels, and provide guidance tailored to your specific situation.
