The tip of the little finger hurts when exposed to cold water?
Since the beginning of winter, I have suddenly experienced pain on the inner side of the distal joint of my right little finger when washing with cold water, but there is no pain when washing with warm water.
Could you please tell me what might be the cause of this?

This is not a neurosurgical issue; it is recommended to consult an orthopedic outpatient clinic for examination.

The pain in your pinky finger joint when exposed to cold water can be attributed to several potential causes, particularly given the specific symptoms you've described. The fact that the pain occurs only with cold water exposure and not with warm water suggests a possible sensitivity to temperature changes, which can be linked to various underlying conditions.
One possible explanation is that you may be experiencing a form of Raynaud's phenomenon, a condition where blood vessels in the fingers constrict excessively in response to cold or stress, leading to pain, numbness, or color changes in the fingers. This condition can be particularly prevalent in individuals who have a history of repetitive hand movements or exposure to cold environments, which may cause vascular changes over time.
Another potential cause could be peripheral neuropathy, which can result from various factors including diabetes, exposure to toxins, or repetitive strain injuries. This condition can lead to abnormal sensations in the fingers, including pain when exposed to cold stimuli. Given that you mentioned the pain is localized to the inner side of the pinky finger joint, it could also indicate an issue with the ulnar nerve, which innervates the pinky and part of the ring finger.
Additionally, tendonitis or tenosynovitis could be contributing to your symptoms. These conditions involve inflammation of the tendons or the sheath surrounding the tendons, which can be exacerbated by cold exposure. If you have been engaging in activities that require repetitive use of your hands, this could lead to inflammation and pain in the joints.
In some cases, osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis can also manifest as joint pain that is sensitive to temperature changes. These conditions involve inflammation of the joints and can lead to pain, swelling, and stiffness, particularly in colder weather.
Given the complexity of your symptoms, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional, preferably a rheumatologist or an orthopedic specialist, who can conduct a thorough examination and possibly order imaging studies or blood tests to rule out specific conditions. They may also recommend treatments such as physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medications, or lifestyle modifications to help manage your symptoms.
In summary, the pain in your pinky finger joint when exposed to cold water could be due to several factors, including Raynaud's phenomenon, peripheral neuropathy, tendonitis, or arthritis. A comprehensive evaluation by a medical professional is essential to determine the exact cause and appropriate treatment plan. In the meantime, keeping your hands warm and avoiding exposure to cold water may help alleviate some of the discomfort you are experiencing.
