Post-arthroscopy
Hello, doctor.
My mother, who is 74 years old, had a meniscus tear in the white zone and underwent arthroscopic surgery on February 15.
Partial debridement (less than 1/2) was performed, and PRP (60cc) was also injected.
In the past two days post-surgery, she has experienced weakness in her legs 2-3 times a day.
Is this normal, or is it temporary? Will she improve afterward?

Post-arthroscopy recovery, particularly after meniscus surgery, can vary significantly from patient to patient, especially in older adults like your mother. At 74 years old, her body may take longer to heal, and her experience of "soft legs" or weakness in the days following surgery is not uncommon.
After a meniscus repair or partial meniscectomy, patients can expect a range of symptoms and recovery patterns. The first few days post-surgery are critical for healing, and it is normal to experience some discomfort, swelling, and weakness in the affected leg. The "soft leg" feeling could be attributed to several factors, including anesthesia effects, muscle atrophy from reduced activity prior to surgery, and the body's natural response to trauma and healing.
What to Expect After Meniscus Surgery:
1. Initial Recovery Phase:
- The first few days post-surgery are typically characterized by swelling and discomfort. Ice application and elevation of the leg can help manage these symptoms.
- It is common to feel weakness or instability in the leg, especially if the patient has been less active prior to surgery. This can lead to a sensation of the leg feeling "soft" or weak.
2. Physical Therapy:
- Engaging in physical therapy is crucial for recovery. A physical therapist will guide your mother through exercises designed to restore strength, flexibility, and range of motion in the knee.
- Early rehabilitation often includes gentle range-of-motion exercises, which can help alleviate stiffness and improve mobility.
3. Gradual Return to Activity:
- Recovery from meniscus surgery can take several weeks to months, depending on the extent of the surgery and the individual’s overall health.
- Patients are typically encouraged to gradually increase their activity level as tolerated. This includes walking with assistance (like crutches or a walker) and eventually transitioning to normal walking.
4. Monitoring Symptoms:
- It is essential to monitor for any unusual symptoms, such as increased swelling, severe pain, or signs of infection (redness, warmth, fever). If these occur, it is important to contact the healthcare provider.
5. Long-term Outlook:
- Many patients experience significant improvement in knee function and a reduction in pain after recovery. However, the timeline for this improvement can vary widely.
- The use of Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy, as in your mother’s case, may enhance healing and reduce inflammation, potentially leading to a quicker recovery.
Conclusion:
In summary, your mother’s experience of having "soft legs" post-surgery is likely a temporary condition as her body adjusts and begins the healing process. With appropriate care, physical therapy, and time, she should gradually regain strength and stability in her knee. It is important to maintain open communication with her healthcare team to ensure that her recovery is on track and to address any concerns that may arise during her rehabilitation. Encouragement and support during this recovery phase can also significantly impact her overall experience and motivation to engage in rehabilitation activities.
