Probability of Pregnancy
Hello, Doctor.
My menstrual cycle averages 38 days, and it has now been 48 days without my period.
My cycle is usually irregular, occurring approximately every 30 to 40 days, and lasts about 7 to 9 days.
My last period was from January 6 to January 13.
I had brief sexual intercourse on January 30 and February 17, both during the safe period, and the condoms were tested for leaks and did not break.
What is the likelihood of pregnancy in this situation? I am really worried.
Also, is my menstrual cycle normal? Should I see a doctor? Thank you very much!
Tangguo, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2023/02/22
Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello, the factors affecting the menstrual cycle are numerous, including age, environment, lifestyle, stress, emotional instability, weight changes, medications, emergency contraception, diet, polycystic ovary syndrome, uterine or cervical lesions, infections, ovulation, pregnancy, miscarriage, and breastfeeding, among others.
Additionally, the failure rate of using condoms correctly throughout the entire intercourse is still around 5%.
If your period has not arrived, it is advisable to consult a gynecologist to check for hormonal imbalances or other underlying causes.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health, Dr.
Zhang.

When it comes to understanding pregnancy chances, especially with irregular menstrual cycles, it's important to consider several factors that can influence both your cycle and your likelihood of conception. Based on your description, your menstrual cycle averages around 38 days, which is longer than the typical cycle of 28 days but still within the range of normal. Cycles can vary significantly among individuals, and a cycle length of 30 to 40 days is not uncommon. However, if your cycle is consistently irregular or if you experience significant changes in your cycle, it may be worth consulting with a healthcare provider.
Regarding your concern about the possibility of pregnancy, it seems that you have engaged in sexual activity during what you believe to be the "safe period." The use of condoms is an effective method of contraception when used correctly, and if you have checked the condoms for any leaks or breaks (as you mentioned with the water test), the likelihood of pregnancy from those encounters is significantly reduced. However, no contraceptive method is 100% effective, and there is always a small risk of pregnancy with any sexual activity.
Given that your last menstrual period started on January 6 and you have not had a period since then, it is understandable that you are feeling anxious. A missed period can be a sign of pregnancy, especially if your cycles are usually more regular. However, stress, hormonal imbalances, changes in weight, and other factors can also lead to delayed menstruation. If your period does not arrive soon, it may be a good idea to take a home pregnancy test for peace of mind. These tests are generally reliable and can provide you with a clearer answer regarding your pregnancy status.
If you find that your menstrual cycles continue to be irregular or if you experience other symptoms such as significant pain, unusual discharge, or any other concerning signs, it would be advisable to seek medical advice. A healthcare provider can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include blood tests, pelvic exams, and possibly imaging studies to assess your reproductive health.
In summary, while the chances of pregnancy seem low given your use of condoms and the timing of your sexual activity, it is always wise to monitor your body and take a pregnancy test if your period does not arrive. If irregular cycles persist or if you have any other health concerns, consulting with a healthcare professional can provide you with the guidance and reassurance you need. Remember, your health and peace of mind are paramount, and seeking help is always a good step when in doubt.
