Dry Eye Disease: Effects of Eye Drops on Vision Clarity - Ophthalmology

Ophthalmic medications for dry eye syndrome?

Hello Doctor, I recently visited an ophthalmologist because I was experiencing discomfort and dryness in my right eye.
The ophthalmologist diagnosed me with dry eye syndrome in both eyes and prescribed some eye drops.
After using them, I noticed significant improvement, but I still feel that my vision has become blurry and is not as clear as it used to be.
Could this be related to the eye drops: Patear B, Delone, Ginpol, or is it possible that my vision is truly deteriorating?

Kai Kai, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2023/02/23

Dr. Gao Pilin reply Ophthalmology

Hello: This is likely not related to the eye drops, but more associated with the prescription of your eyes.
It would be advisable to get an eye examination to determine if you need to wear appropriate glasses.
Of course, if there is insufficient tear production, it can also affect your vision.

Dry Eye Disease (DED) is a common condition that affects millions of people worldwide. It occurs when the eyes do not produce enough tears or when the tears evaporate too quickly, leading to dryness, irritation, and inflammation. The symptoms you describe, such as discomfort and a feeling of dryness in your right eye, are typical of this condition. The eye drops prescribed by your ophthalmologist, such as Patear B, Delone, and Ginpol, are likely intended to alleviate these symptoms by providing moisture and lubrication to the eyes.

However, it's not uncommon for patients to experience changes in vision clarity when using certain eye drops. This can be due to several factors:
1. Viscosity of Eye Drops: Some artificial tears are thicker than others, which can create a temporary blurring effect on vision. If the eye drops have a higher viscosity, they may coat the surface of the eye more effectively but can also lead to transient blurriness.

2. Preservatives: Some eye drops contain preservatives that can irritate the eyes, especially with frequent use. This irritation can lead to discomfort and may contribute to a feeling of blurred vision. If you are using drops that contain preservatives, you might want to discuss with your doctor the possibility of switching to preservative-free options.

3. Tear Film Stability: The application of eye drops can temporarily disrupt the tear film, which is essential for clear vision. If the tear film is not stable immediately after applying the drops, it can lead to a momentary decrease in visual clarity.

4. Underlying Conditions: If you have other underlying conditions, such as cataracts or changes in the cornea, these could also affect your vision clarity. It’s essential to consider that while the eye drops may help with dryness, they may not address other potential causes of blurred vision.

5. Adaptation Period: Sometimes, when starting a new treatment, your eyes may need time to adjust. As your eyes become more accustomed to the drops, you may find that your vision clarity improves.

Regarding your concern about whether your vision is truly deteriorating or if it is related to the eye drops, it would be prudent to monitor your symptoms closely. If the blurriness persists or worsens, it is essential to follow up with your ophthalmologist. They may perform a comprehensive eye examination to rule out any other potential causes of your symptoms, such as changes in your refractive error or other ocular conditions.

In summary, while the eye drops are likely beneficial for managing your dry eye symptoms, they can also contribute to temporary changes in vision clarity. It is crucial to maintain open communication with your eye care provider about your symptoms and any concerns you have regarding your vision. They can help determine whether the changes in your vision are related to the eye drops or if further evaluation is necessary.
