Postoperative Care for Ankle Surgery
Hello, Doctor: I had surgery on February 9 due to an ankle fracture from a car accident.
During my follow-up appointment on February 22, the doctor said that I no longer need to apply medication to the surgical wound and that it can get wet.
However, I still feel pain at the wound site.
Should I just leave it as it is? Additionally, the doctor did not remove my stitches during the appointment on the 22nd, and my next follow-up is in six weeks.
Will the black stitches really be removed after such a long time? The cosmetic adhesive strip on the stitches has been in place for two weeks; does it not need to be replaced since it hasn't fallen off? Thank you for taking the time to clarify these concerns for me.

Generally, the sutures used for cosmetic procedures are "absorbable sutures" that do not require removal.
After one week, they can be exposed to water directly.
The cosmetic adhesive does not need to be removed.
Thank you.

Post-surgery care for an ankle joint, especially after a fracture, is crucial for a successful recovery. After your operation on February 9, it’s understandable to have concerns about your healing process, especially regarding pain, wound care, and the timeline for suture removal.
Firstly, it’s common to experience pain at the surgical site even after the doctor has indicated that the wound is healing well. Pain can be attributed to several factors, including inflammation, the healing process of tissues, and the body's response to surgery. If the pain is manageable and does not worsen, it may be part of the normal healing process. However, if you experience significant pain, swelling, or any signs of infection (such as increased redness, warmth, or discharge), it’s essential to contact your healthcare provider for further evaluation.
Regarding your wound care, since your doctor has advised that the surgical site can now come into contact with water, you should be cautious. While it is generally safe to allow the wound to get wet, you should avoid soaking the area in water (like in a bath or swimming pool) until it is fully healed. Keeping the area clean and dry is vital to prevent infection. If you notice any unusual changes in the wound, such as increased pain or discharge, you should reach out to your doctor.
As for the sutures, the timeline for removal can vary based on the type of sutures used and the specific healing process of your body. Black sutures are often absorbable, which means they may not need to be removed at all. However, if they are non-absorbable, they typically need to be taken out by a healthcare professional. If your next appointment is six weeks after your surgery, it’s likely that your doctor will assess the wound and determine the appropriate time for suture removal at that visit. It’s important to follow your doctor's instructions regarding suture care and removal.
Regarding the adhesive strips (often referred to as Steri-Strips) that are placed over the sutures, these are designed to help support the healing skin. If they are still intact and not peeling off, there is generally no need to replace them. They can usually be left in place until they naturally fall off, which can take a week or two. If they do come off prematurely or if you have concerns about the wound underneath, consult your healthcare provider.
In summary, while some pain and discomfort are expected after ankle surgery, monitoring your symptoms and maintaining proper wound care are essential. Always communicate any concerns with your healthcare provider, as they can provide personalized advice based on your specific situation. Following their guidance will help ensure a smoother recovery process and minimize the risk of complications. Remember, recovery takes time, and being patient with your body as it heals is crucial.
