Intestinal issues?
Hello, Doctor.
Is it normal to experience diarrhea after taking a laxative (Clear Laxative Sugar-coated Tablets)? I visited a colorectal specialist two days ago, and after a digital rectal examination, the doctor found that I was constipated and prescribed me a laxative.
After taking it, I had a bowel movement in the evening; the first was solid, and the second was diarrhea.
The next morning, I woke up with severe abdominal pain and diarrhea, and my stool appeared to be orange-red with some mucus.
The pain subsided after I had a bowel movement.
I have a history of health anxiety and am worried that these symptoms could indicate colorectal cancer.
When I asked the colorectal specialist, he mentioned that the only way to confirm the presence of colorectal cancer is through a colonoscopy.
This uncertainty makes me anxious.
Previously, another doctor performed a sigmoidoscopy and indicated that my stool was well-formed, suggesting that I might have irritable bowel syndrome.
However, I still feel apprehensive and am unsure if I really need to undergo a colonoscopy.
I have had discomfort in my abdomen before and was concerned about stomach cancer, so I underwent an upper endoscopy, which showed nothing significant, just excessive stomach acid.
I am worried about wasting medical resources and feel hesitant, as I have already undergone many tests, including abdominal ultrasound, upper endoscopy, colonoscopy, ECG, and blood tests.
I know I may be wasting medical resources, but I can't help but feel fearful.
I would appreciate your thoughts on this.
Thank you!

Strong laxatives can cause painful contractions of the vaginal canal or even diarrhea; it may be advisable to reduce the dosage or switch medications.

Diarrhea after taking medication for constipation can be a common occurrence, especially when the medication is designed to stimulate bowel movements or soften the stool. In your case, you mentioned taking a medication called 清立飄糖衣錠 (which I assume is a laxative), and experiencing diarrhea afterward. This can happen for several reasons.
Firstly, laxatives work by increasing the water content in the intestines or stimulating the bowel to move more frequently. If the dosage is too high or if your body is particularly sensitive to the medication, it can lead to an overactive bowel response, resulting in diarrhea. The fact that you experienced a mix of normal and loose stools suggests that your digestive system may be adjusting to the medication.
The presence of orange-red stools and mucus can also be concerning, but it is important to note that the color of your stool can be influenced by various factors, including the foods you eat, medications, and even the presence of bile. Mucus in the stool can occur for several reasons, including irritation of the intestinal lining, which can happen with diarrhea or constipation.
Your anxiety about the possibility of colorectal cancer is understandable, especially given your history of gastrointestinal issues and your previous experiences with medical examinations. However, it is essential to remember that many gastrointestinal symptoms can be attributed to less severe conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), which you mentioned was suggested by a previous doctor.
Regarding your concerns about whether to undergo a colonoscopy, it is crucial to weigh the benefits and risks. A colonoscopy is a valuable diagnostic tool that can help identify issues such as polyps, inflammation, or cancer. If your doctor has recommended this procedure, it is likely because they believe it is necessary to rule out serious conditions. While it is natural to feel apprehensive about medical procedures, especially if you fear wasting resources, your health should be the priority.
If you are experiencing significant discomfort or changes in your bowel habits, it is advisable to follow up with your healthcare provider. They can assess your symptoms, review your medical history, and determine whether further testing, such as a colonoscopy, is warranted. Additionally, if your anxiety about your symptoms is affecting your quality of life, discussing this with your doctor may lead to helpful strategies for managing your concerns.
In summary, diarrhea after taking constipation medication can be normal, but if symptoms persist or worsen, it is essential to seek medical advice. Your healthcare provider can help you navigate your symptoms and determine the best course of action for your health. Remember, it is always better to address your concerns rather than let anxiety dictate your health decisions.
