I have small bumps on my glans?
I have small, bump-like lesions on my glans that I’m unsure about; they appear pink and cover a relatively large area, surrounding the coronal sulcus but located on the glans itself.
They are neither painful nor itchy.
Usually, I just do DIY care, but they look quite unusual.
When not erect, the area appears wrinkled and slightly pink, differing from other regions.
When erect, the bumps become more pronounced.
Will this resolve on its own, or do I need to apply any medication?

More Info
Understanding bumps on the glans (the head of the penis) can be concerning, especially when they appear suddenly or change in appearance. Based on your description, it sounds like you may be experiencing a common condition known as pearly penile papules or possibly sebaceous glands, which are normal anatomical variations. However, it is essential to differentiate between benign conditions and those that may require medical attention.
Common Causes of Bumps on the Glans
1. Pearly Penile Papules: These are small, dome-shaped bumps that typically appear around the corona (the ridge of the glans). They are harmless and are considered a normal anatomical variant. They usually do not require treatment unless they cause psychological distress.
2. Sebaceous Glands: These are small, oil-producing glands that can appear as tiny bumps on the skin. They are normal and can be more noticeable in certain areas, including the glans.
3. Fordyce Spots: These are small, painless, pale bumps that can appear on the shaft of the penis or the glans. They are enlarged sebaceous glands and are completely benign.
4. Genital Warts: Caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), these can appear as small, flesh-colored or pink bumps. They may be raised or flat and can be itchy or uncomfortable. If you suspect this, it is essential to see a healthcare provider.
5. Other Infections: Conditions like herpes or fungal infections can also cause bumps or lesions on the glans. These may be accompanied by other symptoms such as pain, itching, or discharge.
When to Seek Medical Attention
While many bumps on the glans are harmless, you should seek medical advice if you experience any of the following:
- Changes in the size, shape, or color of the bumps.
- Development of pain, itching, or discomfort.
- Any discharge from the bumps.
- If the bumps bleed or become ulcerated.
Treatment Options
If the bumps are determined to be benign, no treatment is necessary. However, if they are causing distress or if a diagnosis of a condition like genital warts is made, treatment options may include:
- Topical Treatments: For conditions like genital warts, topical medications such as imiquimod or podofilox may be prescribed.
- Cryotherapy: This involves freezing the warts with liquid nitrogen.
- Laser Therapy: This can be used for more extensive cases of warts or other lesions.
- Surgical Removal: In some cases, surgical excision may be necessary, especially if the bumps are bothersome or suspected to be malignant.
Self-Care and Management
In the meantime, here are some self-care tips:
- Maintain Hygiene: Keep the area clean and dry. Use mild soap and water.
- Avoid Irritants: Avoid harsh soaps, lotions, or other products that may irritate the skin.
- Monitor Changes: Keep an eye on the bumps for any changes in size, color, or symptoms.
Conclusion
In summary, while the bumps you describe may be benign, it is always best to consult a healthcare provider for a proper diagnosis and peace of mind. They can perform a physical examination and may recommend further tests if necessary. Remember, early intervention is key in managing any potential issues effectively. If you have any concerns or if the bumps change in appearance, do not hesitate to seek medical advice.
