Is there a possibility of pregnancy?
Hello Doctor: I have been getting my period at the end of the month (around the 24th or 25th) during high school.
However, starting in January this year, my period came four days early and was very light.
I had protected intercourse with my boyfriend on February 7th, and then my period started on February 14th.
We also had protected intercourse on February 25th.
I went to see a gynecologist on March 3rd for an ultrasound and a pregnancy test, both of which were normal.
We had protected intercourse again on March 4th, and then my period started on March 10th.
My periods have been coming significantly earlier in recent months, and I am unsure if there is a possibility of pregnancy or if this is a normal phenomenon.

When it comes to understanding the possibility of pregnancy, especially in the context of irregular menstrual cycles, it's essential to consider several factors that can influence both ovulation and menstruation. Irregular menstrual cycles can be caused by a variety of factors, including hormonal imbalances, stress, changes in weight, and underlying medical conditions.
In your case, you mentioned that your menstrual cycle has been consistently arriving at the end of the month, but since January, it has started to come earlier and with lighter flow. This change in your cycle could be attributed to several factors, including stress or changes in lifestyle. It's also important to note that menstrual cycles can naturally vary in length and flow from month to month, especially during the teenage years when hormonal levels are still stabilizing.
Regarding the sexual encounters you described, it’s crucial to understand the timing of ovulation. Ovulation typically occurs about 14 days before the start of your next period. If your cycles are irregular, pinpointing ovulation can be more challenging. The fact that you had sexual intercourse on February 7 and then got your period on February 14 suggests that you likely did not conceive during that cycle, as menstruation typically indicates that ovulation did not result in pregnancy.
However, you also mentioned having unprotected intercourse on February 25 and March 4, followed by your period on March 10. If your cycle is indeed irregular, there is a possibility that you could have ovulated later than expected, which could lead to a chance of pregnancy if sperm were present during that time.
You also noted that you had an ultrasound and pregnancy test on March 3, which returned negative results. This is a good indication that you were not pregnant at that time. However, it’s important to remember that pregnancy tests are most accurate when taken after a missed period. If your cycles continue to be irregular, it may be beneficial to wait until your next expected period to take another test if you suspect pregnancy.
If you are concerned about the possibility of pregnancy or the irregularity of your menstrual cycles, it may be a good idea to consult with a healthcare provider. They can perform further evaluations, including blood tests to check hormone levels, and provide guidance on contraception options if you are sexually active and wish to prevent pregnancy.
In summary, while there is a possibility of pregnancy with irregular cycles, the negative pregnancy test and the onset of your period suggest that you are likely not pregnant at this time. However, if your cycles continue to be irregular or if you have further concerns, seeking medical advice would be a prudent step to ensure your reproductive health is monitored and managed appropriately.
