Pain upon rebound when pressing on the left rib cage?
Hello doctor, for the past few months, I have been experiencing discomfort near the 10th rib on the left side of my body.
There is no pain when I press on it, but I feel a sharp pain when I release the pressure.
I also often experience weakness in my arms and symptoms of anemia.
Last year, I had an endoscopy that revealed an ulcer (the treatment has been completed), and I also underwent a colonoscopy, but the results were normal.
I would like to know if this issue could be related to my kidneys or what other tests I could undergo.

More Info
Left rib pain, particularly when it occurs upon release or rebound pressure, can be indicative of several underlying issues. Given your description, it’s essential to consider various potential causes, including musculoskeletal problems, gastrointestinal issues, or even kidney-related conditions.
Possible Causes of Left Rib Pain
1. Musculoskeletal Issues:
- Costochondritis: This is inflammation of the cartilage that connects a rib to the sternum. It can cause pain that may worsen with certain movements or pressure.
- Rib Fractures or Strains: Even without a significant injury, repetitive movements or strain can lead to discomfort in the rib area.
- Intercostal Muscle Strain: The muscles between the ribs can become strained, leading to pain that may be exacerbated by movement or pressure.
2. Gastrointestinal Issues:
- Gastric Ulcers: Since you mentioned a history of ulcers, it’s worth noting that they can sometimes cause referred pain to the rib area, especially if there’s irritation or inflammation.
- Splenic Issues: The spleen is located on the left side and can cause pain if it is enlarged or inflamed (splenomegaly).
3. Kidney Problems:
- Kidney Stones or Infection: Pain from kidney issues can often radiate to the rib area. If you are experiencing additional symptoms such as changes in urination, fever, or flank pain, this could be a concern.
- Renal Cysts or Tumors: Although less common, these can also cause discomfort in the rib area.
4. Anemia and General Weakness:
- The symptoms of weakness and anemia you mentioned could be related to a variety of conditions, including chronic disease, nutritional deficiencies, or ongoing gastrointestinal issues. Anemia can sometimes lead to generalized weakness, which may make you more sensitive to pain.
Recommended Next Steps
1. Consult a Healthcare Provider: Given the complexity of your symptoms, it’s crucial to consult with a healthcare professional who can perform a thorough evaluation. They may recommend imaging studies such as X-rays or an MRI to assess the ribs and surrounding structures.
2. Blood Tests: A complete blood count (CBC) can help evaluate your anemia and check for signs of infection or inflammation. Additional tests may be warranted based on your symptoms.
3. Urinalysis: If kidney issues are suspected, a urinalysis can help identify any abnormalities that may indicate infection or stones.
4. Gastroenterology Follow-Up: Since you have a history of ulcers, it may be beneficial to follow up with a gastroenterologist to ensure that there are no ongoing issues related to your gastrointestinal health.
5. Physical Examination: A thorough physical examination focusing on the rib cage, abdomen, and back can help pinpoint the source of your pain. The healthcare provider may assess for tenderness, swelling, or any other abnormalities.
Conclusion
While left rib pain can stem from various causes, it is essential to approach the situation with a comprehensive evaluation. Your history of ulcers and the presence of anemia and weakness warrant a careful assessment to rule out any serious underlying conditions. Please seek medical attention promptly to address your symptoms effectively and ensure your overall health.
