Sutured wound
I had the sutures removed from my surgical debridement, but there is still a small hole about 0.5 cm.
It oozes tissue fluid and blood daily.
Is this normal? Will it close on its own, or does it need to be stitched up?

Hello! By expressing the tissue fluid daily, applying ointment, and covering it with gauze to absorb the tissue fluid, it will heal quickly.

It is not uncommon for a small wound to leak fluid or blood after stitches have been removed, especially if the wound is still in the healing process. When you undergo a surgical procedure, the body goes through a complex healing process that involves inflammation, tissue repair, and the formation of new skin. During this time, it is normal for wounds to exude some fluid, which can be a combination of blood, serum, and other bodily fluids. This fluid is often referred to as "exudate" and can be a sign that your body is working to heal the area.
In your case, the presence of a small hole (approximately 0.5 cm) after the removal of stitches suggests that the wound may not have fully closed yet. The leaking of tissue fluid and a small amount of blood can be expected, particularly if the wound was deep or if there was significant tissue damage. The body typically produces this fluid as part of the healing process, and it can help to keep the wound moist, which is beneficial for healing.
However, it is essential to monitor the wound for any signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, warmth, or a foul odor. If you notice any of these symptoms, or if the amount of fluid increases significantly, it would be advisable to consult with your healthcare provider. They may want to assess the wound to ensure that it is healing properly and to rule out any complications.
As for whether the wound will close on its own or if it needs to be stitched again, it largely depends on the depth and nature of the wound. Many small wounds can heal naturally without the need for further intervention, especially if they are clean and free from infection. The body has a remarkable ability to heal itself, and small wounds often close up as new tissue forms.
If the wound does not show signs of improvement over the next few days or if it appears to be worsening, it may be necessary to have it evaluated by a healthcare professional. They can determine if additional treatment, such as re-stitching or other interventions, is required. In some cases, if the wound is too deep or if there is a risk of infection, your doctor may recommend closing it with sutures or other methods to promote proper healing.
In summary, while it is normal for a small wound to leak fluid after stitches are removed, it is crucial to keep an eye on the healing process. If you have any concerns about the wound's appearance or if it seems to be healing poorly, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further evaluation and guidance. Proper wound care and monitoring are key to ensuring a smooth recovery.
