Anxiety and restlessness?

1.
Hello Doctor, my previous symptoms included a rapid heartbeat and a feeling of intense nervousness as soon as I stepped outside, as if I were about to faint.
However, I have improved significantly.
Currently, my symptoms occur only when I go out to eat; I feel like everyone is watching me, or I become anxious when driving alone.
Additionally, I feel nervous walking down the street, thinking that everyone is paying attention to me.
Once I leave those situations, I feel much better.
What can I do to resolve this?
2.
Doctor, I tend to seek answers for everything, no matter how big or small the issue is, until I find a solution.
I also have to check things multiple times before going out.
What symptoms might this indicate?

Niming, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2023/03/16

Dr. Qiu Junda reply Psychiatry

Hello.
1.
How have your previous symptoms improved? If you have sought medical attention, please return for follow-up treatment.
If you have not sought medical care, I still recommend that you take the time to consult a healthcare professional regarding your current symptoms to explore both pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods for improvement.
2.
Generally, this still falls under the category of anxiety.
If excessive repeated examinations are causing distress, it may be necessary to evaluate whether this is a symptom of obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Therefore, I suggest consulting a mental health specialist for clarification and improvement.

Understanding anxiety and its symptoms is crucial for managing everyday challenges effectively. Anxiety can manifest in various forms, and your experiences reflect common patterns that many individuals face. Let's break down your concerns and explore potential solutions.

1. Symptoms of Anxiety: Your description of feeling like everyone is watching you when you go out, along with the rapid heartbeat and tension, suggests social anxiety or performance anxiety. This is a common condition where individuals feel excessively self-conscious in social situations, leading to significant discomfort. The fact that you feel better once you leave the situation indicates that the anxiety is context-dependent. It's important to recognize that these feelings are valid and that many people experience similar symptoms.

2. Compulsive Checking and Seeking Answers: The behavior of needing to check things multiple times before leaving or feeling compelled to find answers to every question can be indicative of obsessive-compulsive tendencies. This can manifest as a way to cope with uncertainty and anxiety, where the individual feels that by checking or seeking answers, they can somehow control the situation or alleviate their fears.

Solutions for Managing Anxiety:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): One of the most effective treatments for anxiety disorders is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. CBT helps individuals identify and challenge negative thought patterns and beliefs that contribute to anxiety. By reframing these thoughts, you can reduce the intensity of your anxiety symptoms. A therapist can guide you through this process, helping you develop coping strategies tailored to your specific experiences.

Exposure Therapy: For social anxiety, exposure therapy can be particularly beneficial. This involves gradually exposing yourself to the situations that trigger your anxiety in a controlled and supportive environment. Over time, this can help desensitize you to the anxiety-provoking stimuli, making it easier to manage your reactions.

Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques: Practicing mindfulness can help you stay grounded in the present moment, reducing the tendency to ruminate on anxious thoughts. Techniques such as deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, or meditation can help calm your nervous system and reduce anxiety levels. Incorporating these practices into your daily routine can provide significant relief.

Medication: In some cases, medication may be necessary to manage anxiety symptoms effectively. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and benzodiazepines are commonly prescribed for anxiety disorders. If your symptoms are significantly impacting your daily life, discussing medication options with a healthcare provider may be beneficial.

Support Groups: Connecting with others who experience similar challenges can provide a sense of community and understanding. Support groups can offer a safe space to share experiences and coping strategies, helping you feel less isolated in your struggles.

Journaling: Keeping a journal can be a helpful way to process your thoughts and feelings. Writing down your anxieties can provide clarity and help you identify patterns in your thinking. This practice can also serve as a tool for reflection, allowing you to track your progress over time.

Conclusion:
It's essential to approach anxiety with compassion and understanding. Recognizing that you are not alone in your experiences can be empowering. Seeking professional help, whether through therapy or medication, can provide you with the tools you need to manage your symptoms effectively. Remember, overcoming anxiety is a journey, and it's okay to take it one step at a time. By implementing these strategies and seeking support, you can work towards a more manageable and fulfilling life.
