Sudden Increase in Hemorrhoid Size: What You Need to Know - Surgery

The hemorrhoid suddenly increased in size by four times?

I have a spinal cord injury and am paralyzed with no sensation in my body.
I have stage 4 mixed hemorrhoids, and after a bowel movement, there was a swelling about the size of a thumb.
Once, I had a hard stool that got stuck, and I spent half an hour trying to manually relieve it.
As a result, the hemorrhoid suddenly increased in size by three times and became very hard.
After a day, it softened but still remains about the size of 2.5 thumbs.
Will it shrink again, or will it stay that size? Do I need to go to the hospital?

When dealing with a sudden increase in the size of hemorrhoids, especially in the context of existing conditions such as a spinal cord injury and mixed hemorrhoids (stage IV), it is crucial to approach the situation with caution and seek medical advice. Hemorrhoids can become inflamed and swollen due to various factors, including straining during bowel movements, which seems to be the case in your situation after a difficult bowel movement.

The sudden increase in size, particularly if it has tripled and is accompanied by hardness, may indicate a thrombosed hemorrhoid. This occurs when a blood clot forms within the hemorrhoid, leading to increased pain and swelling. While it is possible for the hemorrhoid to reduce in size over time, especially if the clot resolves, it is also important to consider that the condition may not return to its previous state without intervention.

Here are some key points to consider regarding your situation:
1. Observation and Symptoms: If the hemorrhoid has softened but remains significantly enlarged, it is essential to monitor any accompanying symptoms such as pain, bleeding, or changes in bowel habits. If you experience severe pain, persistent bleeding, or any signs of infection (such as fever or increased redness), you should seek immediate medical attention.

2. Potential for Reduction: Hemorrhoids can sometimes reduce in size on their own, especially with conservative management such as increased fiber intake, hydration, and warm sitz baths. However, given the significant increase in size and your history of mixed hemorrhoids, it is uncertain whether it will return to its original size without medical intervention.

3. Medical Evaluation: Given your history of spinal cord injury and the current state of your hemorrhoids, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional. A proctologist or a gastroenterologist can provide a thorough evaluation and recommend appropriate treatment options. This may include non-surgical methods such as rubber band ligation, sclerotherapy, or, in more severe cases, surgical intervention.

4. Preventive Measures: To prevent further exacerbation of your hemorrhoids, consider implementing lifestyle changes. This includes a high-fiber diet, adequate fluid intake, and avoiding straining during bowel movements. If you are experiencing difficulty with bowel movements due to your condition, discussing this with a healthcare provider can help you find suitable solutions, such as stool softeners or laxatives.

5. Follow-Up Care: Regular follow-up with your healthcare provider is essential, especially since you have a complex medical history. They can help monitor your condition and adjust treatment plans as necessary.

In conclusion, while there is a possibility that your hemorrhoid may decrease in size over time, the significant increase and hardness warrant a medical evaluation. It is crucial to address this promptly to prevent complications and ensure appropriate management of your condition. Please do not hesitate to seek medical attention, as this is the best course of action for your health and well-being.
