Breast engorgement after menstruation?

Hello, I was supposed to have my menstrual period at the beginning of February, but it was delayed.
After seeing a doctor at the end of February, I took medication to induce my period for 7 days, and my menstrual cycle occurred from March 6 to March 12, with normal flow and duration.
However, starting on March 19, I began to feel breast fullness, lower abdominal discomfort, and a slight stabbing pain.
Could this be a sign of ovulation, or is there a possibility of pregnancy? I had sexual intercourse on March 13 and March 14.

Yuufish, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2023/03/20

Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, it should be related to ovulation; just observe it.
Wishing you good health.

Breast tenderness can be a common symptom experienced by many women, and it can arise from various physiological changes in the body. In your case, the timing of your symptoms following your menstrual cycle raises a couple of possibilities: ovulation or early pregnancy.

Firstly, let’s discuss ovulation. Ovulation typically occurs about 14 days before the start of your next menstrual period. For women with a regular cycle, this would mean that if your period started on March 6, ovulation would likely have occurred around March 20. During ovulation, some women experience a variety of symptoms, including breast tenderness, abdominal discomfort, and even slight cramping. This is due to hormonal fluctuations, particularly the rise in estrogen and luteinizing hormone (LH) that occurs just before ovulation. Therefore, the breast tenderness and lower abdominal discomfort you are experiencing around March 19 could indeed be related to ovulation.

On the other hand, the possibility of early pregnancy cannot be ruled out, especially since you mentioned having unprotected sexual intercourse on March 13 and 14. If fertilization occurred, it typically takes about 6-10 days for a fertilized egg to implant in the uterus, which can lead to early pregnancy symptoms. Breast tenderness is a common early sign of pregnancy, often caused by increased levels of hormones such as progesterone and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). Other early signs of pregnancy may include fatigue, nausea, and changes in appetite.

Given that your menstrual cycle was disrupted and you took medication to induce menstruation, it’s also important to consider how this might affect your hormonal balance. The use of medication can sometimes lead to temporary changes in your body’s normal hormonal patterns, which might contribute to breast tenderness and other symptoms.

If you suspect pregnancy, the most reliable way to confirm this would be to take a home pregnancy test. These tests are most accurate when taken after a missed period, but since your cycle was irregular, you may want to wait a few days after your symptoms began to test for the most accurate result.
In summary, the breast tenderness and abdominal discomfort you are experiencing could be attributed to either ovulation or early pregnancy. If your symptoms persist or if you have any concerns, it would be advisable to consult with your healthcare provider for further evaluation. They can provide you with the necessary tests and guidance based on your specific situation.
Additionally, if you are considering pregnancy or are actively trying to conceive, it’s beneficial to maintain a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet, regular exercise, and prenatal vitamins, which can support your reproductive health. If you have any further questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for personalized advice.
