Ultrasound echocardiogram report inquiry (including single-sided and double-sided)?
Hello Doctor, I previously had an ultrasound examination because I often experience brief sharp pains in my heart that do not last long.
When it occurs, bending down gives me a sensation as if my heart is being constricted, somewhat similar to the feeling of cerebral congestion when inverted.
I went for the examination but I somewhat forgot what the doctor said at that time.
Could you please help me review this report?

Hello, mild grade 2 mitral valve prolapse is not a concern and is unrelated to your symptoms.

More Info
Understanding your echocardiogram report can be daunting, especially when it contains numerous technical terms and measurements. Let's break down the key components of your report and what they mean for your heart health.
Key Measurements and Their Significance
1. Left Ventricular Ejection Fraction (LVEF): Your report indicates an LVEF of 62.1%, which is above the normal threshold of 50%. This means that your left ventricle is effectively pumping blood out to the body, indicating preserved systolic function.
2. Chamber Sizes:
- Left Atrial (LA) Size: Your LA measures 22 mm, which is within the normal range (19-40 mm). An enlarged left atrium can be a sign of heart disease, but yours appears normal.
- Left Ventricular End-Diastolic Diameter (LVEDD): At 41.1 mm, this is also within the normal range (35-53 mm), indicating that the size of your left ventricle is normal at the end of filling.
- Left Ventricular End-Systolic Diameter (LVESD): Your LVESD is 27.5 mm, which is normal (20-35 mm).
3. Wall Thickness:
- Interventricular Septum (IVS): At 9.9 mm, this is slightly above the normal range (7-10 mm), but not significantly concerning.
- Left Ventricular Posterior Wall (LVPW): At 8.8 mm, this is within the normal range (8-13 mm).
4. Doppler Measurements:
- Mitral Valve (MV) Flow: The E and A wave velocities (72.1 cm/s and 57.1 cm/s, respectively) indicate how well blood flows through the mitral valve. The E/A ratio can help assess diastolic function, and yours appears normal.
- Tricuspid Regurgitation (TR): The report notes trivial TR, which means there is a very small amount of backward flow through the tricuspid valve, generally not a cause for concern.
5. Mitral Valve Prolapse: The report indicates that you have mitral valve prolapse (MVP) with trivial mitral regurgitation (MR). MVP is a common condition where the mitral valve does not close properly, but if the regurgitation is trivial, it usually does not require treatment.
Diagnosis Summary
- Normal Four Chamber Size: This indicates that all four chambers of your heart are of normal size, which is a good sign.
- Preserved RV and LV Systolic Function: Both the right and left ventricles are functioning well, which is crucial for effective blood circulation.
- No Regional Wall Motion Abnormality: This means that all parts of the heart are contracting normally, which is a positive finding.
- Trivial MR and TR: As mentioned, these are minor issues that typically do not require intervention unless symptoms worsen.
Suggestions and Next Steps
Given your report, it appears that your heart is functioning well overall. However, the symptoms you described—occasional sharp pains and a feeling of pressure when bending—should not be ignored. It is essential to discuss these symptoms with your healthcare provider, as they can help determine if further evaluation or monitoring is necessary.
In summary, while your echocardiogram shows some minor issues like mitral valve prolapse and trivial regurgitation, your heart's overall function and structure appear to be normal. Regular follow-ups with your cardiologist are advisable to monitor your condition and address any new symptoms that may arise. Always feel free to ask your doctor for clarification on any part of your report that you do not understand; they can provide personalized insights based on your health history and current condition.
