Gum problems
I noticed that the area behind the last molar is easily penetrable with a toothpick after using it today.
I suspect it might be due to the wisdom tooth extraction I had before the New Year, which hasn't healed properly.
After using the toothpick today, I noticed a white discharge coming from that area, and it has an unpleasant odor.
I would like to know if I can wait over a month for an appointment at a dental clinic, or if I need to seek medical attention urgently given this situation.

If there is inflammation and swelling of the gums, you should see a dentist immediately.
Otherwise, try to keep the area clean and monitor for any discomfort in the gums.

After wisdom tooth extraction, proper care of the surgical site is crucial to ensure healing and prevent complications. Based on your description, it sounds like you are experiencing some concerning symptoms, including the presence of white discharge and an unpleasant odor from the area where your wisdom tooth was removed. These symptoms may indicate an infection or a condition known as dry socket, which can occur when the blood clot at the extraction site becomes dislodged or fails to form properly.
Given that you are able to insert a toothpick into the area, this suggests that there may be a significant gap or opening where the gum tissue has not healed adequately. The white discharge could be pus, which is a sign of infection, and the odor may be due to bacteria present in the area. It is essential to address these symptoms promptly, as untreated infections can lead to more severe complications, including the spread of infection to surrounding tissues.
While it may be challenging to secure an appointment with a dental clinic or hospital, it is advisable not to wait for an extended period, especially given your symptoms. If you are unable to see your regular dentist or a specialist in a timely manner, consider seeking care at an urgent dental clinic or an emergency room, where they can provide immediate evaluation and treatment. Infections can escalate quickly, and early intervention is key to preventing further complications.
In the meantime, here are some steps you can take to manage your symptoms and promote healing:
1. Maintain Oral Hygiene: Gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water several times a day, especially after meals. This can help reduce bacteria in the mouth and promote healing. Avoid vigorous rinsing, as this can dislodge any healing tissue.
2. Avoid Irritants: Refrain from using toothpicks or any sharp objects in the area, as this can further irritate the gum tissue and introduce bacteria.
3. Pain Management: If you are experiencing discomfort, over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help alleviate pain and reduce inflammation.
4. Dietary Adjustments: Stick to soft foods that are easy to chew and swallow, avoiding anything that could irritate the extraction site.
5. Monitor Symptoms: Keep an eye on your symptoms. If you notice increased swelling, redness, or worsening pain, seek care immediately.
6. Avoid Smoking: If you smoke, try to avoid it, as smoking can hinder healing and increase the risk of complications.
In summary, while it may be challenging to get an appointment, do not delay seeking care for your symptoms. The presence of white discharge and odor suggests that you may have an infection that requires treatment. Prompt dental evaluation is essential to ensure proper healing and to prevent any potential complications.
