Frustration with Invisalign: No Improvement for Prominent Teeth - Dentistry

Orthodontic treatment for protruding teeth with no improvement?

I have straight teeth, but my overbite is very noticeable.
X-rays show that the angle of my upper teeth could be around 120 to 130 degrees.
I consulted with a doctor about whether Invisalign could improve my overbite.
During follow-up visits, the doctor repeatedly assured me that it was possible and that I might not even need extractions, just some tooth contouring.
The proposed treatment plan indicated that it would only take 3 to 4 months.
When I asked if my teeth could be moved inward, the doctor also said yes.
I trusted the doctor's expertise and proceeded with the treatment, but now that I am in the later stages of the process, I see no improvement at all.
I'm wondering if the initial plan was unrealistic from the start, as my main concern during the consultation was this issue, and I am really frustrated with the lack of progress.

Hello: It is advisable to discuss clearly with the physician what the final goals are, such as improving the protrusion of the lips and the degree to which the teeth are retracted.
There should be a clear treatment plan with precise measurements and even computer software predictions of the final appearance, otherwise, it will be unclear when the treatment is considered complete.

Frustration with Invisalign treatment, especially when it comes to prominent teeth, is a common concern among patients. It sounds like you have been through a significant journey with your orthodontic treatment, and it's understandable to feel frustrated when the results do not meet your expectations.
Invisalign is a popular orthodontic treatment that uses a series of clear aligners to gradually move teeth into their desired positions. While it can be effective for many types of dental misalignments, there are limitations to what it can achieve, particularly in cases of significant protrusion or when the underlying dental structure is not conducive to the desired movement.

From your description, it seems that during your initial consultation, your dentist assured you that the treatment could address your concerns without the need for tooth extraction, which is often a more invasive approach. However, if you are not seeing the expected improvements after several months of treatment, it raises a few important considerations:
1. Initial Assessment: The effectiveness of Invisalign largely depends on the initial assessment and treatment plan created by your orthodontist. If the plan was overly optimistic or did not take into account the specific angles and positions of your teeth, it may not yield the desired results. It's crucial to have a thorough examination, including X-rays, to understand the underlying issues.

2. Treatment Expectations: It's important to have realistic expectations about what Invisalign can achieve. While it can effectively correct many alignment issues, it may not be suitable for more complex cases, such as significant protrusion or severe crowding. If your teeth were assessed to have a 120-130 degree angle, this could indicate a more complex case that might require additional interventions.

3. Communication with Your Orthodontist: Open communication with your orthodontist is essential. If you feel that your concerns have not been adequately addressed, it may be beneficial to schedule a follow-up appointment to discuss your frustrations. Ask specific questions about the treatment plan, the expected outcomes, and whether adjustments can be made to improve results.

4. Alternative Options: If after discussing with your orthodontist you still feel that Invisalign is not meeting your needs, it may be worth exploring alternative treatment options. This could include traditional braces, which may provide more control over tooth movement, or even surgical options if the protrusion is severe and cannot be corrected with orthodontics alone.

5. Second Opinion: If you continue to feel dissatisfied with the progress of your treatment, seeking a second opinion from another orthodontist can provide you with additional insights and options. Different practitioners may have varying approaches and techniques that could be more effective for your specific case.

In summary, while Invisalign can be a great option for many patients, it is not a one-size-fits-all solution. If you are not seeing the improvements you expected, it is crucial to communicate your concerns with your orthodontist, reassess the treatment plan, and consider alternative options if necessary. Remember, achieving the desired results may take time and sometimes requires adjustments to the original plan.
