Hyperventilation

Hello, since my surgery last year, I have been experiencing frequent hyperventilation issues (numbness in my hands and feet, shortness of breath, rapid heartbeat).
I have undergone echocardiography, electrocardiogram, and chest X-ray, and all the results were normal.
However, I still feel that my breathing is not smooth.
Does this indicate anxiety or something else? Do I need to take Fu'an Yuan tablets every day? My doctor prescribed Fu'an Yuan tablets.

It is indeed possible that anxiety could be the cause.
As for medication, please consult your physician.

Hyperventilation, or excessive breathing, can indeed be a perplexing and distressing experience, especially when it is accompanied by symptoms such as tingling in the hands and feet, shortness of breath, and rapid heartbeat. Given that you've undergone thorough cardiac evaluations—including echocardiograms, EKGs, and chest X-rays—all of which returned normal results, it is reasonable to consider that your symptoms may be related to anxiety rather than a direct cardiac issue.

Anxiety can manifest in various physical symptoms, including hyperventilation. When a person is anxious, the body enters a state of heightened alertness, often referred to as the "fight or flight" response. This physiological reaction can lead to rapid breathing, which in turn can cause a decrease in carbon dioxide levels in the blood, resulting in symptoms like lightheadedness, tingling, and a feeling of breathlessness. This cycle can create a feedback loop where the anxiety about not being able to breathe properly exacerbates the hyperventilation, leading to further anxiety.

In your case, the timing of your symptoms—occurring after surgery—could indicate that the stress of the surgical experience, along with any associated pain or recovery challenges, may have triggered an anxiety response. It is not uncommon for individuals to develop anxiety symptoms following significant medical events, as the body and mind process the trauma and stress associated with surgery.

Regarding the medication you mentioned, "福安源錠" (likely referring to a medication used for anxiety or panic disorders), it is essential to follow your doctor's instructions regarding its use. If your doctor has prescribed it, they believe it will help manage your symptoms. However, whether it needs to be taken daily or as needed should be clarified with your healthcare provider. It is crucial to have open communication with your doctor about how you are feeling on the medication, any side effects you may experience, and whether you feel it is effectively managing your symptoms.

In addition to medication, consider exploring other therapeutic options that can help manage anxiety and hyperventilation. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is particularly effective for anxiety disorders, as it helps individuals identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to their anxiety. Mindfulness and relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing exercises, progressive muscle relaxation, or yoga, can also be beneficial in reducing anxiety and improving your overall sense of well-being.

If you find that your hyperventilation persists despite these interventions, or if you experience new or worsening symptoms, it is vital to seek further evaluation from your healthcare provider. They may recommend additional assessments or adjustments to your treatment plan to ensure that you receive the most effective care for your situation.

In summary, while your hyperventilation may be linked to anxiety, it is essential to continue working with your healthcare provider to monitor your symptoms and adjust your treatment as necessary. With the right support and strategies, many individuals find relief from anxiety and its physical manifestations, allowing them to regain a sense of control and well-being.
