After eating pineapple, urine may have a pineapple scent?

Hello, doctor.
As the title suggests, my urination is normal usually, but today after eating pineapple, I noticed a similar smell in the bathroom, and I'm a bit worried if there might be an issue with my body.
Three years ago, I had blood tests for liver and kidney function, and everything was fine.
Is there any cause for concern?

Dear Anonymous Sir:
1.
The food or beverages we consume undergo processes of absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion in the body, with most being eliminated through urine.
Some substances are transformed into various metabolites, while others are metabolized but retain some of their original characteristics; of course, some are excreted nearly unchanged, especially simpler and water-soluble compounds.
Therefore, after consuming a larger amount of garlic, our urine may have a garlic odor.
After eating red dragon fruit, our urine may appear red.
Excessive alcohol consumption leads to the production of acidic metabolites.
After taking penicillin antibiotics, our urine may have a penicillin-like smell.
There are many everyday examples that could be cited.
2.
It is not surprising that after consuming pineapple, urine may produce a similar odor; theoretically, our government’s Council of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration should be monitoring this without issues.
3.
If you still have concerns, I recommend following up with a nephrology outpatient clinic at a regional hospital or higher.

More Info

Eating pineapple can indeed affect the odor of urine, and this is primarily due to the compounds found in the fruit. Pineapple contains a variety of organic acids, sugars, and enzymes, including bromelain, which can contribute to a distinct smell in urine after consumption. This phenomenon is not uncommon and can be attributed to the way certain foods are metabolized in the body.

When you eat pineapple, the body breaks down its components, and some of these metabolites are excreted through urine. The presence of certain compounds, such as sulfur-containing amino acids, can lead to a change in urine odor. Other foods, like asparagus and coffee, are also known to cause similar effects due to their unique chemical compositions.

It's important to note that changes in urine odor after consuming specific foods are generally harmless and not indicative of any underlying health issues, especially if you have previously undergone tests that showed normal liver and kidney function. However, if you notice persistent changes in urine odor, color, or consistency, or if you experience other symptoms such as pain, burning during urination, or changes in urinary frequency, it would be wise to consult a healthcare professional.

In your case, since you mentioned that your urine was normal before eating pineapple and that you have had blood tests showing no issues with your liver or kidneys three years ago, it is likely that the odor change is simply a result of the pineapple consumption. This is a common occurrence and should not be a cause for concern.

In summary, eating pineapple can lead to a temporary change in urine odor due to the fruit's natural compounds. This is a normal physiological response and typically does not indicate any health problems. However, maintaining awareness of your body and any other symptoms is essential, and if you have concerns, seeking medical advice is always a good practice.
