Acute gastroenteritis with watery diarrhea?
Hello, doctor.
A few days ago, a couple of hours after lunch, I suddenly felt unwell and started vomiting profusely.
It felt like acute gastroenteritis.
Although I felt a bit better after vomiting, I still experienced some nausea (the feeling of wanting to vomit but not being able to).
Today, I feel much better, but I have been having watery diarrhea, usually about three to four times a day, and my stomach has been making gurgling noises frequently.
I have been replenishing electrolytes and water over the past few days.
How long might these symptoms persist? Thank you.

It varies by individual and condition, typically around 3-5 days.
If symptoms are severe, medical attention and medication may be necessary for control and improvement.
It is important to disinfect the toilet and hands after use to prevent transmission to others.

More Info
Acute gastroenteritis, commonly referred to as stomach flu, is an inflammation of the stomach and intestines that can lead to a variety of symptoms, including vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and nausea. The onset of symptoms can occur suddenly, often within hours of consuming contaminated food or water. In your case, it appears that you experienced a classic presentation of acute gastroenteritis, characterized by sudden vomiting followed by diarrhea.
The recovery timeline for acute gastroenteritis can vary significantly from person to person, depending on several factors, including the underlying cause (viral, bacterial, or parasitic), the individual's overall health, and how well they manage their symptoms. Generally, most individuals start to feel better within a few days to a week. However, some symptoms, particularly diarrhea, may persist for a longer period, sometimes up to two weeks or more, especially if the gastrointestinal tract is still recovering from the inflammation.
In your situation, since you are experiencing ongoing diarrhea and a feeling of nausea, it is essential to continue focusing on hydration. Electrolyte solutions are particularly beneficial as they help replenish lost fluids and essential minerals. It's good to hear that you have been diligent about this, as dehydration is a common complication of gastroenteritis, especially when diarrhea is frequent.
The "water-like" stools you are experiencing are typical during the acute phase of gastroenteritis. The frequency of bowel movements can vary, but it's not uncommon to have several episodes per day, especially in the initial days following the onset of symptoms. The gurgling sounds in your abdomen are also a normal part of the digestive process, particularly when the intestines are irritated.
As for how long these symptoms might last, it can be challenging to predict an exact timeline. If your symptoms are improving, such as a reduction in the frequency of diarrhea and a decrease in nausea, you may expect to see further improvement in the next few days. However, if you notice that your symptoms are worsening or if you develop new symptoms (such as high fever, severe abdominal pain, or blood in your stool), it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly.
In terms of dietary recommendations during recovery, it is advisable to start with a bland diet that includes easily digestible foods. The BRAT diet (bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast) is often recommended for those recovering from gastroenteritis. Gradually reintroducing other foods as tolerated can help your digestive system adjust. It's best to avoid fatty, spicy, or highly acidic foods, as well as dairy products, until you are fully recovered, as these can exacerbate symptoms.
In summary, while acute gastroenteritis can be uncomfortable and disruptive, most individuals recover fully within a week or so, with proper hydration and dietary management. Continue monitoring your symptoms, stay hydrated, and gradually reintroduce foods as you feel able. If you have any concerns or if your symptoms persist beyond a week, it would be wise to consult with a healthcare provider for further evaluation and management.
