Am I Pregnant? Delayed Periods and Possible Causes - Obstetrics and Gynecology

Are you pregnant?

My menstrual cycle is 35 days, and my period is now 13 days late, which has never happened in the past five years.
Previously, it would only be delayed by 2 or 3 days at most! However, I took a pregnancy test two days before my expected period and again seven days after it was overdue, both showing negative results.
Interestingly, during this time, I experienced a very small amount of dark brown discharge.
I'm unsure what the issue could be, especially since I started using traditional Chinese medicine to regulate my body a month ago.
Could this be the reason? (But my Chinese medicine doctor said it wouldn't cause a delay.) Or could it simply be due to the stress of wanting to conceive? Or is there a problem with my mother-in-law's herbal remedy? I apologize for asking so many questions, but I would greatly appreciate your insights, as Dr.
Lu's answers are always very detailed.
Thank you!

Hello! The use of traditional Chinese medicine may alter the hormonal balance in the body, which can lead to delayed menstruation.
Of course, stress and anxiety can also be contributing factors, and sometimes lack of sleep may play a role as well.
There are many reasons for this, but as long as menstrual regulation is achieved, there should be no major issues.
This is respectfully noted by Dr.
Lu Li-Cheng, Director of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Taoyuan Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

When it comes to delayed periods and the possibility of pregnancy, there are several factors to consider. Based on your description, you have a regular menstrual cycle of 35 days, and you are currently 13 days late, which is unusual for you. You mentioned that you have taken pregnancy tests both two days before your expected period and seven days after, both of which returned negative results. Additionally, you experienced a small amount of dark brown discharge during this time.

First, it’s important to understand that a delayed period can be caused by a variety of factors, including hormonal imbalances, stress, lifestyle changes, and medical conditions. Since you mentioned that you have started using traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to regulate your body, it’s worth noting that while some herbal remedies can influence menstrual cycles, many practitioners believe that TCM should not cause significant delays. However, individual responses to herbal treatments can vary widely.

Stress is another significant factor that can affect your menstrual cycle. The psychological impact of wanting to conceive can create anxiety, which may lead to hormonal fluctuations that delay ovulation and, consequently, your period. This is often referred to as "stress-induced amenorrhea." If you have been under considerable stress, especially related to the desire to become pregnant, this could certainly be a contributing factor.

The presence of dark brown discharge can also be indicative of several things. It may simply be old blood that is taking longer to exit the body, or it could be related to hormonal changes. In some cases, it can be a sign of implantation bleeding if pregnancy were to occur, but since your tests have been negative, this is less likely.

Given that you are 13 days late and have had negative pregnancy tests, it may be advisable to wait a few more days and then retest. If your period does not arrive within the next week, or if you continue to experience unusual symptoms, it would be wise to consult with a healthcare provider. They may recommend a blood test for pregnancy, which is more sensitive than home urine tests, or they may want to investigate other potential causes for your delayed period.

In summary, while the possibility of pregnancy cannot be entirely ruled out, especially given the timing of your tests, the combination of stress, potential hormonal influences from TCM, and the nature of your discharge suggests that there may be other factors at play. Monitoring your symptoms and consulting with a healthcare professional if your period does not arrive soon is the best course of action. Remember, your health and peace of mind are paramount, and seeking professional guidance can provide clarity and reassurance.
