Enlarged Nipple and Areola: When to See a Specialist? - Surgery

One side of the nipple and areola is swollen?

Previously, I experienced redness, swelling, and pain on the right side of my chest due to an allergy or eczema.
After visiting the breast clinic, the doctor applied a topical medication called Liniderm, which alleviated the redness and pain.
However, the entire right nipple still appears larger, and there is a raised area on the skin of the areola.
Is this normal? Should I see a dermatologist or return to the breast clinic for further evaluation?

Dr. Chen Jiaming reply Surgery

It is recommended to return to the original prescribing breast clinic for follow-up examinations.

Enlarged nipple and areola can be concerning symptoms, especially if they are accompanied by changes in color, texture, or pain. In your case, it seems that you have experienced some allergic reactions or eczema that led to redness and pain in your right breast, which improved with the use of a topical medication. However, the persistent enlargement of the nipple and the areola's skin texture changes warrant further evaluation.

Firstly, it is important to understand that the nipple and areola can undergo various changes due to hormonal fluctuations, skin conditions, or other underlying health issues. In many cases, these changes can be benign, but they can also indicate more serious conditions that require medical attention.

Given that you have already consulted a breast specialist and received treatment for your symptoms, it is advisable to follow up with them regarding the ongoing enlargement of your nipple and areola. The breast specialist is well-equipped to assess any potential issues related to breast health, including any concerns about the enlargement and the texture of the areola. They can perform a thorough examination and may recommend imaging studies, such as a mammogram or ultrasound, if necessary.

If the breast specialist determines that the changes are related to a skin condition, they may refer you to a dermatologist for further evaluation and treatment. Dermatologists specialize in skin-related issues and can provide targeted therapies for conditions like eczema or allergic reactions that may be affecting the skin of the nipple and areola.

It is also important to consider any other symptoms you may be experiencing. If you notice any unusual discharge from the nipple, persistent pain, or changes in the appearance of the breast, these could be signs that require immediate attention. In such cases, do not hesitate to seek medical advice promptly.

In summary, while the changes you are experiencing may be benign, it is essential to consult with a healthcare professional who can provide a comprehensive evaluation. Since you have already seen a breast specialist, I recommend returning to them for further assessment of the enlarged nipple and areola. They can determine whether a referral to a dermatologist is necessary or if further investigation is warranted. Always prioritize your health and seek medical advice when you notice changes in your body, especially in sensitive areas like the breasts.
