Can adults with amblyopia undergo laser vision correction?
Hello, doctor.
I was diagnosed with amblyopia in my right eye when I was 23 years old.
My left eye has no myopia, while my right eye had a prescription of -4.50 to -4.75 diopters at that time.
The ophthalmologist mentioned a significant disparity between the two eyes and recommended corrective glasses or laser surgery for myopia.
However, the cost of the laser procedure was quite high, so I opted for glasses.
Unfortunately, I was not accustomed to wearing glasses and often went without them, which seems to have worsened the disparity.
Now, I find it difficult to see distant objects clearly even with my original glasses.
I am unsure whether I should seek treatment from an ophthalmologist or if I can visit a pediatric amblyopia clinic, as there are currently no adult amblyopia clinics available.
I would like to ask the doctor how I should address my eye issues.
Thank you.
🙏

Hello: Based on your description, you have an issue with amblyopia in your right eye, and your vision is gradually deteriorating.
It is recommended that you visit an ophthalmologist for an examination as soon as possible to prevent further decline in your vision.
The doctor may suggest some tests to determine the severity and possible causes of your vision problems.
It is not necessary to see a specialized amblyopia clinic; a general ophthalmology clinic can conduct the necessary evaluations.
However, due to your age, the effectiveness of amblyopia treatment may not be very promising, but it is still worth trying.
However, laser surgery for myopia may not be very helpful.

Amblyopia, commonly known as "lazy eye," is a condition where one eye does not develop proper vision during childhood. It often results from a significant difference in refractive error between the two eyes, such as in your case, where your right eye has a higher degree of myopia compared to your left eye. This condition can lead to permanent vision impairment if not treated early, typically during childhood.
As for your question regarding laser vision correction for adults with amblyopia, the answer is nuanced. Laser vision correction procedures, such as LASIK or PRK, are primarily designed to correct refractive errors like myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. However, they do not directly address the underlying issues of amblyopia. The success of laser surgery in individuals with amblyopia can vary significantly based on the severity of the condition and the degree of visual impairment in the affected eye.
In your case, since you have not been wearing corrective lenses consistently, your amblyopia may have worsened. This inconsistency can lead to further deterioration of vision in your right eye, making it more challenging to achieve satisfactory results with laser surgery. Moreover, laser correction typically requires that both eyes have similar visual acuity for optimal outcomes. If your right eye's vision is significantly poorer than your left, this could complicate the situation.
It's important to note that while laser surgery can correct refractive errors, it does not improve the brain's ability to use the weaker eye effectively. Therefore, even if your right eye's refractive error is corrected, you may still experience amblyopia-related issues, such as poor depth perception or difficulty focusing with both eyes together.
Given your situation, it would be advisable to consult with an eye care professional who specializes in amblyopia or vision therapy. While there may not be specific adult amblyopia clinics, many ophthalmologists and optometrists are equipped to handle such cases. They can provide a comprehensive evaluation of your eyes and vision, discuss potential treatments, and determine whether you are a suitable candidate for laser vision correction or if other interventions, such as vision therapy or patching, might be more beneficial.
In summary, while adults with amblyopia can undergo laser vision correction, it may not fully resolve the issues associated with the condition. A thorough assessment by a qualified eye care professional is essential to determine the best course of action for your specific situation. If you have not been wearing your glasses regularly, it is crucial to start using them again to help stabilize your vision before considering any surgical options.
