Questions about nasopharyngoscopy?
Hello, doctor.
I have serious mental and physical issues, including anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, hypochondria, and possibly delusional disorder.
I am currently receiving treatment from a psychiatrist.
Recently, I visited an ENT clinic where the doctor performed a nasopharyngoscopy.
The doctor confidently told me that my nasopharynx appeared completely normal.
During the procedure, I was holding my phone, which had the recording function turned on the entire time.
Later, I realized that while I was waiting for my appointment, my son had taken my phone to play a game and accidentally activated the recording feature.
I only retrieved my phone just before entering the examination room and did not pay special attention to its status.
I would like to ask the doctor if holding a recording phone during the nasopharyngoscopy would affect the results of the examination.
Thank you, doctor.

More Info
Recording during a nasopharyngoscopy should not affect the results of the examination itself. The procedure primarily relies on the visual inspection of the nasopharynx using a flexible endoscope, which allows the physician to directly observe the tissues and structures in that area. The presence of a recording device, such as your smartphone, does not interfere with the optical equipment used in the procedure or the physician's ability to assess the condition of your nasopharynx.
However, it is important to consider a few points regarding the context of your situation. First, if you were feeling anxious or distracted by the recording device, it might have influenced your comfort level during the examination. Anxiety can sometimes lead to muscle tension or difficulty in following instructions, which could potentially affect the ease of the procedure. Nonetheless, this would not change the actual findings of the nasopharyngoscopy.
Second, the recording itself may capture sounds or conversations that occur during the examination, but it will not alter the visual assessment made by the physician. The doctor’s evaluation is based on what they see through the endoscope, and their findings are documented in the medical report. If the doctor stated that your nasopharynx appeared normal, this conclusion is based on their direct observation, not influenced by any external factors such as a recording device.
In terms of your mental health concerns, it’s understandable that anxiety and obsessive-compulsive tendencies might lead you to worry about various aspects of medical examinations. It’s crucial to communicate these feelings with your healthcare provider, as they can offer support and strategies to help manage anxiety during medical procedures. Techniques such as deep breathing, mindfulness, or even discussing your concerns with the physician before the procedure can help create a more comfortable experience.
Lastly, if you have any lingering concerns about the results of your nasopharyngoscopy or if you experience any symptoms that worry you, it is advisable to follow up with your ENT specialist. They can provide further clarification and reassurance regarding your health status.
In summary, the act of recording during a nasopharyngoscopy does not affect the examination results. Your physician's assessment is based solely on their visual inspection through the endoscope. If you have further questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for additional guidance and support.
