Dear Dr.
He,
Recently, I have been using a mobile app called "Rhythm Cam" to monitor my heart rate and rhythm.
Today, I recorded an instance of "irregular heartbeat" without experiencing any discomfort (such as palpitations, chest tightness, or dizziness).
However, upon retesting, it showed a "regular rhythm." I have the following questions for you:
Q1.
Is it possible to have an irregular heartbeat without any symptoms or sensations?
Q2.
The "Rhythm Cam" app is primarily designed to screen for atrial fibrillation, which is why it measures heart rate and rhythm.
However, even if an irregular rhythm is detected, can we directly equate this to atrial fibrillation? It could also be due to other factors causing occasional arrhythmias, such as premature beats.
Q3.
Is it correct to say that palpitations do not equal arrhythmias? For instance, if a palpitation occurs but the heartbeat is still regular, does that mean the rhythm is considered regular?
Thank you for your clarification on these matters.

Hello, I do not recommend using the Love Heart Monitor as its accuracy may not be reliable and is related to the sensitivity of the device.
Both overly sensitive and less sensitive devices can yield different results.
Additionally, detecting irregular heart rhythms does not equate to atrial fibrillation.
This can also increase your anxiety unnecessarily.
Most people do not feel any symptoms when experiencing arrhythmias; palpitations do not necessarily indicate arrhythmia.
Using Rhythm Cam can lead to unnecessary worry.
There is no need for Changhua Christian Hospital to be concerned about you.

Understanding irregular heartbeats can be quite complex, and it's great that you're taking the initiative to monitor your heart health using technology like the "Rhythm Cam" app. Let's address your questions one by one.
Q1: Can irregular heartbeats occur without any symptoms?
Yes, it is entirely possible for individuals to experience irregular heartbeats, or arrhythmias, without any noticeable symptoms. Many people may have episodes of arrhythmia that are asymptomatic, meaning they do not feel any palpitations, dizziness, or chest discomfort. This phenomenon can occur with various types of arrhythmias, including atrial fibrillation, premature atrial contractions (PACs), or premature ventricular contractions (PVCs). The heart can sometimes beat irregularly due to factors such as stress, caffeine intake, dehydration, or even changes in body position. However, if you consistently notice irregularities in your heart rhythm, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for further evaluation.
Q2: Does an irregular heartbeat necessarily indicate atrial fibrillation?
Not at all. While the "Rhythm Cam" app is designed to screen for atrial fibrillation (AFib), an irregular heartbeat does not automatically mean that you have AFib. There are many types of arrhythmias, and some can be benign, such as occasional PACs or PVCs, which are common and often harmless. Other factors, such as anxiety, electrolyte imbalances, or structural heart issues, can also lead to irregular heart rhythms. Therefore, while an irregular reading should prompt further investigation, it is essential to interpret these findings in the context of your overall health and any symptoms you may experience.
Q3: Is palpitations synonymous with arrhythmias?
Palpitations and arrhythmias are related but not synonymous. Palpitations refer to the sensation of feeling your heart beating, which can be described as fluttering, pounding, or racing. This sensation can occur with both regular and irregular heart rhythms. For example, you might feel a strong heartbeat (palpitations) even when your heart rhythm is regular. Conversely, you can have an irregular heartbeat without feeling any palpitations at all. It is important to note that while palpitations can be associated with arrhythmias, they can also occur in the absence of any arrhythmia due to factors like anxiety, stress, or excessive caffeine consumption.
In summary, while monitoring your heart rhythm is a proactive approach to your health, it is crucial to interpret the results carefully. Irregular heartbeats can occur without symptoms, and not all irregularities indicate a serious condition like atrial fibrillation. Palpitations do not always equate to arrhythmias, and understanding these nuances can help you better manage your heart health. If you have ongoing concerns or if you experience any new symptoms, I recommend discussing them with your cardiologist, who can provide personalized advice and possibly recommend further testing if necessary.
