Balanitis and Phimosis: Cleaning and Whether to Seek Medical Attention

Hello, I noticed inflammation about two days ago, mainly around the corona area, with symptoms resembling ulceration and peeling.
After taking anti-inflammatory medication for two days, the swelling has reduced, and the itching is no longer severe.
I would like to ask if I should wash off the flakes on the affected area after gently inspecting it daily and rinsing it with clean water.
The peeling area is painful, so I have only been cleaning and drying it.
Given my current condition, is it advisable for me to purchase and apply tetracycline ointment? I'm not sure if it's serious enough to require a doctor's visit.
Thank you for your response.

Hello: About two days ago, I noticed an inflammatory condition, primarily around the corona with symptoms resembling ulceration and peeling.
Given the sexual activity, I need to seek medical attention and explain the situation to the doctor to see if any tests are necessary.
After taking anti-inflammatory medication for two days, the swelling has decreased, and the itching is no longer severe.
I would like to ask if I should wash off the flakes on the affected area after rinsing it with clean water and drying it? -- Rinsing is necessary, and I only dry the area because the peeling is painful.
Currently, can I purchase and apply tetracycline ointment myself? -- I am unsure if my condition is serious enough to require a doctor's visit since there is broken skin.
-- If there is broken skin, medical attention should be sought.
Wishing you good health.

Balanitis, which is inflammation of the glans penis, can be caused by various factors including infections, irritants, and underlying health conditions. Your symptoms of inflammation, peeling, and pain in the area around the corona suggest that you may be experiencing a mild case of balanitis. It’s good to hear that you have already started taking anti-inflammatory medication and noticed some improvement.

In terms of managing your condition at home, maintaining proper hygiene is crucial. Here are some tips for cleaning and caring for the affected area:
1. Gentle Cleaning: You should continue to gently clean the area with warm water. Avoid using soaps or other irritants that could exacerbate the condition. It’s important to ensure that the area is clean but not overly scrubbed, as this can lead to further irritation.

2. Drying: After washing, make sure to dry the area thoroughly. Moisture can promote the growth of bacteria and fungi, which can worsen inflammation. Pat the area dry with a clean towel rather than rubbing it.

3. Removing Skin Flakes: If you have skin flakes or peeling, it’s generally advisable to clean them gently. However, if the area is painful, it may be best to avoid aggressive cleaning. You can use a soft cloth to gently wipe away any loose skin without causing further irritation.

4. Topical Treatments: Regarding the use of tetracycline ointment, it’s important to be cautious. While tetracycline can be effective against certain bacterial infections, it’s best to consult with a healthcare professional before applying any medication. Self-treating without a proper diagnosis can sometimes lead to complications, especially if the cause of the inflammation is not purely bacterial.

5. When to Seek Medical Help: You should consider seeking medical attention if:
- The symptoms worsen or do not improve after a few days of home treatment.

- You experience increased pain, swelling, or discharge from the area.

- There are signs of a more serious infection, such as fever or systemic symptoms.

- You have recurrent episodes of balanitis, which may indicate an underlying condition such as diabetes or a sexually transmitted infection.

6. Underlying Conditions: If you have a history of recurrent balanitis or other skin conditions, it may be worth discussing these with a healthcare provider. Conditions like diabetes can predispose individuals to infections, including balanitis.

In summary, while you can manage mild cases of balanitis at home with proper hygiene and care, it’s essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If you notice any worsening or if you have concerns about the severity of your condition, don’t hesitate to seek medical advice. A healthcare professional can provide a proper diagnosis and recommend appropriate treatment, which may include prescription medications if necessary.
