Can I get pregnant?

Hello doctor, my period started on April 13.
On April 26, I had intercourse while using a condom.
After finishing, I pulled out before it became soft, but I noticed some fluid leaking onto the bed.
Since it was the first time I experienced such a significant amount, I couldn't help but worry.
Later, I tested the condom by filling it with water, and there were no leaks.
Is there a possibility that I could be pregnant? Thank you, doctor.

San, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2023/04/26

If used throughout the entire process, it should be safe; the key point is whether the vaginal area has come into contact with semen.

When it comes to understanding the effectiveness of condom use and the concerns surrounding potential pregnancy, it’s essential to consider several factors. Based on your description, you had your menstrual period on April 13 and engaged in sexual intercourse on April 26 while using a condom. After intercourse, you noticed some fluid leakage, which has understandably raised your concerns about the possibility of pregnancy.

First, let's address the effectiveness of condoms. Condoms are one of the most common forms of contraception and, when used correctly, they are about 98% effective at preventing pregnancy. This means that out of 100 couples using condoms as their only form of birth control, about 2 will experience an unintended pregnancy within a year. However, the effectiveness can decrease if the condom is not used properly, such as if it breaks or slips off during intercourse.

In your case, you mentioned that you performed a water test on the condom after intercourse, which did not show any leaks. This is a good indication that the condom was intact and functioning as it should. The fluid you observed could be a combination of vaginal secretions and possibly pre-ejaculate fluid, which is normal and does not necessarily indicate a failure of the condom.

Regarding the timing of your menstrual cycle, if your cycle is regular and you ovulate around the midpoint of your cycle (which is typically around 14 days after the first day of your last period), then April 26 would be close to your fertile window. However, sperm can live inside the female reproductive tract for up to five days, so if you were to ovulate shortly after intercourse, there is a possibility of pregnancy. That said, since you used a condom and it did not leak, the likelihood of pregnancy is significantly reduced.

If you are still feeling anxious about the possibility of pregnancy, consider taking a home pregnancy test. These tests are most accurate when taken after a missed period. If your period is late or you experience any unusual symptoms, it would be wise to consult with a healthcare provider for further evaluation and guidance.

In addition to the concerns about pregnancy, it’s also important to consider sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Condoms are effective at reducing the risk of STIs when used correctly, so it’s always a good practice to use them consistently, especially with new or non-monogamous partners.

In summary, based on the information you provided, the chances of pregnancy are low due to the proper use of the condom and the water test indicating no leaks. However, if you have any lingering doubts or if your menstrual cycle does not follow its usual pattern, taking a pregnancy test or consulting with a healthcare provider can provide peace of mind. Remember, open communication with your partner about contraception and sexual health is essential for a healthy sexual relationship.
