Can I get pregnant?

Hello doctor, my period started on April 13.
On April 26, I had intercourse while using a condom.
After finishing, I pulled out before it became soft, but I noticed some discharge on the bed.
Since it was the first time I experienced such a significant amount, I couldn't help but worry.
Later, I tested the condom by filling it with water, and there were no leaks.
Is there a possibility that I could be pregnant? Thank you, doctor.

San, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2023/04/27

If used throughout the entire duration, it should be safe; the key point is whether the vaginal area has come into contact with semen.

When it comes to the possibility of pregnancy after condom use, it's important to understand how condoms work and the factors that can influence their effectiveness. Condoms are a popular form of contraception, and when used correctly, they can be very effective in preventing pregnancy. However, no contraceptive method is 100% foolproof, and there are several considerations to keep in mind.

First, let's address the situation you described. You mentioned that you had your period on April 13 and engaged in sexual intercourse on April 26 while using a condom. After intercourse, you noticed some fluid on the bed, which raised your concerns about potential leakage. However, you also conducted a water test with the condom, which showed no leaks. This is a good sign, as it suggests that the condom was intact during use.

Condoms are designed to prevent sperm from entering the vagina, and if used correctly, they can reduce the risk of pregnancy by about 98%. This means that while there is still a small chance of pregnancy (about 2% with perfect use), the likelihood of becoming pregnant from a single instance of condom use, especially when the condom appears to have functioned properly, is relatively low.

It's also important to consider the timing of your menstrual cycle. If you have a regular cycle, ovulation typically occurs around 14 days before your next period. Since your last period started on April 13, you would likely ovulate around April 27. Engaging in intercourse on April 26 puts you right at the edge of your fertile window, which can increase the risk of pregnancy if contraception fails. However, since you used a condom and it did not leak, the risk remains low.

Now, regarding the fluid you noticed after intercourse, it's important to differentiate between pre-ejaculate fluid (pre-cum) and ejaculate. Pre-ejaculate can contain sperm, but the concentration is usually much lower than in ejaculate. If the condom was used properly and did not break or leak, the chances of sperm entering the vagina are minimal.

If you are still concerned about the possibility of pregnancy, you can consider taking a home pregnancy test. Most tests are accurate if taken at least one week after a missed period. If your period is late or you experience any unusual symptoms, it would be wise to consult with a healthcare provider for further evaluation.

In summary, while there is always a small risk of pregnancy with any form of contraception, using a condom correctly significantly reduces that risk. Given that your condom did not leak during the water test and considering the timing of your menstrual cycle, the likelihood of pregnancy is low. However, if you have any lingering concerns, taking a pregnancy test or consulting with a healthcare professional can provide you with peace of mind.
