Fell from a height and struck the head?
This morning, while engaging in high-altitude sports, I lost my grip due to fatigue and fell from a height.
Although there was a soft mat below, I hit the lower right side of my head near my ear upon landing.
There were no external injuries, and aside from some pain at the impact site and slight dizziness, I did not experience any other symptoms at the time.
After returning home, I felt a bit tired but had no other discomfort, except for mild pain when shaking my head at the impact site.
My right cheek feels slightly numb, but I am unsure if it is just my imagination due to the fall.
I am concerned and would like to know which specialist I should see for an examination and when would be the best time to go.
Thank you.

If there are symptoms or concerns, it is advisable to seek medical attention.
Thank you.

More Info
When it comes to head injuries, especially those resulting from falls from a height, it is crucial to be vigilant about potential symptoms and seek appropriate medical attention when necessary. Based on your description of the incident, you experienced a fall while engaging in high-altitude activities, which resulted in a bump to the lower right side of your head near the ear. Although you initially reported only mild pain and slight dizziness, the presence of facial numbness or tingling, even if minimal, warrants careful consideration.
When to Seek Medical Attention
1. Immediate Symptoms: After a head injury, certain symptoms should prompt immediate medical evaluation. These include:
- Loss of consciousness, even briefly.
- Persistent or worsening headache.
- Dizziness or balance issues that do not improve.
- Nausea or vomiting.
- Confusion, difficulty concentrating, or memory problems.
- Seizures.
- Weakness or numbness in any part of the body.
2. Delayed Symptoms: Some symptoms may not appear until hours or even days after the injury. These can include:
- Increasing headache or pressure in the head.
- Changes in vision, such as blurred or double vision.
- Difficulty speaking or understanding speech.
- Severe drowsiness or difficulty waking up.
- Any unusual behavior or personality changes.
Given that you experienced slight dizziness and facial numbness, it is advisable to monitor these symptoms closely. If they worsen or if new symptoms develop, you should seek medical attention promptly.
Which Specialist to See
For head injuries, the most appropriate specialists to consult are:
- Emergency Medicine: If you are experiencing acute symptoms or if you feel uncertain about your condition, visiting an emergency room is the best course of action. They can perform necessary imaging studies, such as a CT scan, to rule out any serious injuries like fractures or internal bleeding.
- Neurology: If your symptoms are mild and you are not experiencing any immediate danger, you may consider scheduling an appointment with a neurologist. They specialize in conditions affecting the nervous system and can provide a thorough evaluation of your symptoms.
- Neurosurgery: If there is a concern about structural damage to the brain or skull, a neurosurgeon may be involved in your care.
Timing for Medical Evaluation
- Immediate Evaluation: If you experience any of the serious symptoms mentioned above, do not hesitate to seek medical attention immediately.
- Follow-Up: If your symptoms remain mild but you are still concerned, it is wise to consult a healthcare provider within 24 to 48 hours after the injury. This allows for a thorough assessment and peace of mind.
Conclusion
In summary, while you may feel fine at the moment, it is essential to remain vigilant about any changes in your condition following a head injury. Given your concerns about facial numbness and the potential for delayed symptoms, it would be prudent to consult a medical professional. If symptoms worsen or new ones arise, seek immediate medical attention. Remember, it is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to head injuries. Your health and safety are paramount.
