Recently, I have been feeling a pressure near my chest, close to my stomach?
For the past few days, when I lie flat on my bed, I feel a sensation as if something is pressing against my chest near my stomach.
I'm not sure if this is related to my spinal surgery after I fell from a ladder in February, when an X-ray indicated that I had a fracture in my 12th thoracic vertebra.
I wonder if this sensation is due to the fracture or if there might be an issue with my stomach.

Please first consult the surgeon who performed your operation, and then see a gastroenterologist.
Thank you.

Feeling pressure near the stomach can be a concerning symptom, especially when there is a history of trauma, such as a fall that resulted in a spinal injury. It is essential to differentiate between potential gastrointestinal issues and complications related to your spine.
Given your history of a fall and subsequent spinal surgery, it is possible that the pressure you are feeling could be related to your spine. The thoracic spine, particularly the T12 vertebra, plays a crucial role in supporting the upper body and protecting the organs in the abdominal cavity, including the stomach. A fracture in this area can lead to referred pain or discomfort in the surrounding regions, including the abdomen. This is often due to muscle spasms or changes in posture that occur as a result of the injury.
On the other hand, gastrointestinal issues could also be a cause of the pressure sensation. Conditions such as gastritis, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), or even peptic ulcers can manifest as a feeling of pressure or discomfort in the upper abdomen. Symptoms like bloating, nausea, or changes in bowel habits can accompany these conditions. If you have experienced any changes in your appetite, weight loss, or persistent nausea, it would be prudent to consider these gastrointestinal issues as potential causes.
To address your concerns, it is advisable to consult with both your orthopedic surgeon and a gastroenterologist. They can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include imaging studies, such as an MRI of the spine to assess any complications from your previous injury, and possibly an endoscopy or abdominal ultrasound to evaluate your gastrointestinal health.
In the meantime, managing your symptoms is essential. If the pressure sensation is accompanied by pain, over-the-counter pain relief medications may help, but it is crucial to avoid NSAIDs if you have a history of gastrointestinal issues, as they can exacerbate conditions like ulcers or gastritis.
Additionally, practicing good posture and engaging in gentle exercises, as recommended by your healthcare provider, can help alleviate some discomfort related to spinal issues. Stress management techniques, such as mindfulness or relaxation exercises, may also be beneficial, as stress can exacerbate both spinal and gastrointestinal symptoms.
In summary, while your history of a spinal injury could be contributing to the pressure you feel near your stomach, it is equally important to rule out any gastrointestinal problems. A comprehensive evaluation by your healthcare providers will help determine the underlying cause and guide appropriate treatment.
