Chills and shivering?

Recently, I suddenly felt chills and shivering, which lasted for about an hour, followed by mild nausea and a small amount of vomiting.
After that, I suddenly felt fine.
Since this has never happened to me before, I would like to ask what the possible diagnosis could be.
Which department should I visit for further examination?

Lin Lin, 40~49 year old female. Ask Date: 2023/04/30

Dr. Zeng Guosen reply Internal Medicine

Feeling cold and shivering can sometimes be a precursor to a fever, but there are other potential causes as well.
If a fever is present, you may want to consult an infectious disease specialist for differential diagnosis.
If there is no fever, it would be advisable to see a family medicine physician for evaluation.
Thank you.

Experiencing chills and shaking can be concerning, especially when accompanied by symptoms like nausea and vomiting. These symptoms can arise from a variety of causes, ranging from benign to more serious conditions. Understanding the potential reasons behind these symptoms is crucial for determining the appropriate course of action.

One common cause of chills and shaking is a viral or bacterial infection. When the body is fighting off an infection, it can trigger a fever response, which often leads to chills as the body attempts to regulate its temperature. Conditions such as influenza, gastroenteritis, or even a urinary tract infection can manifest with these symptoms. The nausea and vomiting you experienced could also be indicative of a gastrointestinal infection, which often accompanies such illnesses.

Another possible cause could be hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar levels. If you haven’t eaten for an extended period or have a condition like diabetes, your blood sugar may drop, leading to symptoms like shaking, chills, and nausea. Similarly, dehydration or electrolyte imbalances can lead to similar symptoms, particularly if you have been ill or have not been consuming enough fluids.

Anxiety or panic attacks can also manifest physically, causing symptoms such as shaking, chills, and nausea. If you have been under significant stress or have a history of anxiety disorders, this could be a contributing factor.
In some cases, chills and shaking can be a sign of more serious conditions, such as sepsis or severe allergic reactions. If these symptoms are accompanied by other alarming signs, such as difficulty breathing, chest pain, or confusion, it is essential to seek immediate medical attention.

Given that this episode was sudden and unprecedented for you, it would be wise to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. You should consider visiting a primary care physician or an urgent care facility where they can assess your symptoms in detail. They may perform a physical examination and order tests, such as blood tests or imaging studies, to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms.

If the chills and shaking recur or if you experience additional symptoms, such as high fever, persistent vomiting, or severe abdominal pain, you should seek medical attention promptly. It’s always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to unexplained physical symptoms.

In summary, while chills and shaking can be caused by various factors, including infections, hypoglycemia, anxiety, or more serious conditions, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely and consult a healthcare professional for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. Taking these steps will help ensure your health and well-being.
