Anorectal foreign body sensation
Hello, doctor.
I ate something spicy on Friday night, and since then, I've been feeling strange for the past two days.
After having a bowel movement, it feels like there is still stool in my rectum, but when I go again after a while, there is indeed more stool.
This happens about every half hour to an hour.
Do I need to see a doctor for this? The feeling of a foreign body in my rectum was better yesterday, but after my bowel movement this morning, I felt that sensation again, as if there was still stool inside.
I did have another bowel movement afterward, but I still feel some discomfort.
I'm not sure if it's due to anxiety or if it's hemorrhoids.
However, there hasn't been any blood in my stool.
A few years ago, I was diagnosed with hemorrhoids.

When it comes to rectal sensations and the feeling of incomplete evacuation after a bowel movement, it's important to understand the potential causes and when to seek medical advice. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing a sensation of rectal fullness or the feeling that there is still stool present after you have already had a bowel movement. This can be concerning and may stem from various factors.
Firstly, the sensation you are experiencing could be related to several benign conditions. One common cause is hemorrhoids, which you mentioned having in the past. Hemorrhoids can cause discomfort and a sensation of fullness due to swelling and inflammation in the rectal area. They can also lead to changes in bowel habits and sensations of incomplete evacuation.
Another possibility is rectal prolapse, where part of the rectum protrudes through the anus, leading to a feeling of fullness or the sensation of a foreign body in the rectum. This condition can occur more frequently in individuals with a history of straining during bowel movements, which may be exacerbated by dietary choices, such as consuming spicy foods, which can irritate the gastrointestinal tract.
Additionally, anxiety can play a significant role in how we perceive bodily sensations. Stress and anxiety can heighten awareness of bodily functions and lead to sensations that may not be present in a relaxed state. If you find that your symptoms are fluctuating with your anxiety levels, this could be a contributing factor.
In terms of your symptoms, the absence of blood in your stool is a positive sign, as it often indicates that there is no significant bleeding or severe underlying condition. However, the persistence of the sensation of rectal fullness, especially if it continues or worsens, warrants further evaluation.
Here are some guidelines on when to seek medical advice:
1. Duration of Symptoms: If the sensation persists for more than a few days or worsens, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional.
2. Associated Symptoms: If you experience additional symptoms such as pain, bleeding, significant changes in bowel habits, or weight loss, you should seek medical attention promptly.
3. Previous Conditions: Given your history of hemorrhoids, it would be prudent to have a healthcare provider evaluate your current symptoms to rule out any complications or the development of new issues.
4. Impact on Daily Life: If the sensation is causing significant discomfort or anxiety, it is worth discussing with a doctor. They can provide reassurance and potential treatment options.
In conclusion, while your symptoms may be benign and related to hemorrhoids or anxiety, it is always best to err on the side of caution. A healthcare provider can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include a physical examination and possibly imaging studies, to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms. They can also provide guidance on dietary changes, lifestyle modifications, or treatments to alleviate your discomfort. Remember, your health and peace of mind are paramount, so do not hesitate to seek help if you feel it is necessary.
