I'm not sure what's wrong..?
Hello Dr.
Chen,
I would like to ask you about my situation.
My period has been delayed for over a month, and I have had sexual intercourse with my boyfriend, but we always used condoms.
However, when my period was a week late, I went to see a doctor and took a urine test, which showed I was not pregnant.
The doctor mentioned that I have irregular ovulation, so they administered a menstrual induction injection and prescribed medication for me to take.
However, after another week, my period still did not come, so I went back for another injection, but again, after another week, there was still no period.
What could be going on?
Additionally, I have been feeling unwell recently and have developed gastroenteritis.
Could this also affect my menstrual cycle? If I am sick or have any other health issues, could that impact my period? Please help me with these questions.
Thank you!
selina, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2004/01/07
Dr. Zhan Deqin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
If your period is overdue and you received a menstrual induction injection but it still hasn't arrived, you should take a pregnancy test again.
If necessary, an ultrasound examination can be performed.
There is no need to receive injections every week; although illness can affect your menstrual cycle, it should not prevent the onset of menstruation after receiving injections or medication.

More Info
Irregular menstrual cycles can be a source of concern for many women, and understanding the underlying causes is crucial for effective management. Based on your description, it seems you have experienced a significant delay in your menstrual period, which has lasted over a month. You mentioned that you have been sexually active but used protection, and a pregnancy test confirmed that you are not pregnant. Additionally, your doctor indicated that you have irregular ovulation and provided treatment options, including hormonal injections and medication to induce menstruation.
Firstly, it is important to recognize that menstrual cycles can be influenced by a variety of factors, including hormonal imbalances, stress, lifestyle changes, and underlying health conditions. In your case, the irregularity in your cycle could be attributed to hormonal fluctuations, which are common in women of reproductive age. Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, or other endocrine issues can disrupt the normal hormonal signals that regulate ovulation and menstruation.
The fact that you have experienced a delay in your period despite medical intervention suggests that your body may be experiencing a more complex hormonal imbalance. The use of medications to induce menstruation, such as progestins, is a common approach to address irregular cycles. However, if these treatments are not effective, it may indicate that there are other underlying issues that need to be addressed.
You also mentioned that you have been experiencing gastrointestinal issues, specifically gastroenteritis. It is well-documented that acute illnesses, especially those that affect your overall health and well-being, can impact your menstrual cycle. Stress on the body, whether from illness, significant lifestyle changes, or emotional stress, can lead to disruptions in the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian (HPO) axis, which is responsible for regulating the menstrual cycle. Therefore, it is plausible that your recent illness could be contributing to the irregularity in your periods.
In terms of solutions, it is essential to continue working closely with your healthcare provider. They may recommend further evaluation to rule out any underlying conditions that could be affecting your menstrual cycle. This could include blood tests to assess hormone levels, imaging studies to evaluate the ovaries and uterus, or other diagnostic procedures as necessary.
In the meantime, maintaining a healthy lifestyle can also play a significant role in regulating your menstrual cycle. This includes managing stress through relaxation techniques, ensuring adequate nutrition, and engaging in regular physical activity. Additionally, keeping track of your menstrual cycle and any associated symptoms can provide valuable information for your healthcare provider.
In summary, irregular menstrual cycles can arise from various factors, including hormonal imbalances, stress, and underlying health conditions. Your recent gastrointestinal illness may also be a contributing factor. It is crucial to continue your follow-up with your healthcare provider to explore further diagnostic options and treatment strategies. By addressing both your physical health and any potential stressors in your life, you can work towards achieving a more regular menstrual cycle.
