Anorectal foreign body sensation
Hello, I inquired about the sensation of a foreign body in the anus yesterday.
I would like to ask again.
I visited a gastroenterologist who used an anoscope to examine me and said that there was nothing concerning, only internal hemorrhoids.
After taking medication and applying ointment, the sensation of a foreign body disappeared yesterday.
However, just now, after having a bowel movement, that sensation returned.
Given this situation, do I need to undergo a fecal occult blood test or a colonoscopy? Thank you.

It is not necessary; you can return for a follow-up appointment only after finishing the medication.

When experiencing a sensation of rectal foreign body or discomfort, it is essential to understand the underlying causes and when to seek further testing. Based on your description, you have already consulted a gastroenterologist who performed a rectal examination and diagnosed you with hemorrhoids, which can often cause a sensation of fullness or pressure in the rectal area. The fact that the discomfort subsided after medication and topical treatment is a positive sign, indicating that the hemorrhoids may be the primary issue.
However, the recurrence of the foreign body sensation after a bowel movement raises some questions. Hemorrhoids can indeed cause discomfort, especially during or after defecation, due to swelling and inflammation. The straining associated with bowel movements can exacerbate this sensation. It is also possible that other factors, such as diet, hydration, and bowel habits, could contribute to your symptoms.
Given that you have experienced this sensation again, it is prudent to consider a few factors before deciding on further testing:
1. Duration and Frequency of Symptoms: If the sensation persists or worsens over the next few days, or if you experience additional symptoms such as bleeding, significant pain, or changes in bowel habits, it would be wise to seek further evaluation.
2. Stool Characteristics: If you notice any changes in your stool, such as blood, mucus, or a significant change in consistency (e.g., diarrhea or constipation), these could be indicators that further testing is necessary. A stool occult blood test could be beneficial in this case to rule out any gastrointestinal bleeding.
3. Response to Treatment: Since you mentioned that the sensation improved with medication, it may be worth continuing the current treatment plan for a little longer. If the symptoms do not improve or if they return consistently, this could warrant further investigation.
4. Other Symptoms: Pay attention to any accompanying symptoms such as abdominal pain, weight loss, or changes in appetite. These could indicate a more serious condition that requires further testing, such as a colonoscopy.
5. Follow-Up with Your Doctor: Since you have already consulted a gastroenterologist, it would be advisable to follow up with them if your symptoms persist. They may recommend further testing, such as a colonoscopy, especially if there is a concern about other underlying conditions.
In summary, while your current symptoms may be related to hemorrhoids, the recurrence of the foreign body sensation after bowel movements suggests that monitoring your condition is essential. If symptoms persist or worsen, or if you develop new symptoms, do not hesitate to seek further evaluation. Regular follow-ups with your healthcare provider are crucial in managing your symptoms effectively and ensuring that any potential issues are addressed promptly.
