Post-retinal detachment surgery
Hello, Director Tsai.
I underwent retinal detachment surgery on May 12, and today is the third day post-operation.
Each time I clean the discharge (ocular oil), there is a small amount of blood mixed in.
Is this normal? Thank you.
🙏

After undergoing retinal detachment surgery, it is not uncommon to experience some blood in the eye discharge, especially within the first few days post-operation. This can be attributed to several factors related to the surgical procedure and the healing process of the eye.
Firstly, during retinal surgery, the delicate tissues of the eye, including the retina and surrounding structures, may be manipulated or incised, leading to minor bleeding. This bleeding can result in blood being mixed with the discharge that you observe. The presence of a small amount of blood in the discharge is generally considered a normal part of the healing process, particularly in the initial days following surgery.
Typically, the discharge you are experiencing, often referred to as "eye mucus" or "eye discharge," can vary in consistency and color. It may appear clear, yellowish, or slightly blood-tinged. The blood you see may be due to the surgical trauma to the conjunctiva (the membrane covering the white part of the eye) or other tissues that are healing. As the eye continues to heal, the amount of blood in the discharge should gradually decrease.
However, it is essential to monitor the situation closely. If the blood in the discharge increases significantly, or if you experience other symptoms such as increased pain, swelling, redness, or changes in vision, it is crucial to contact your ophthalmologist immediately. These could be signs of complications such as infection or excessive bleeding, which may require further evaluation and treatment.
In addition to the presence of blood, it is also common to experience other post-operative symptoms such as blurred vision, sensitivity to light, and discomfort. These symptoms should gradually improve as your eye heals. It is important to follow your doctor's post-operative care instructions, including any prescribed medications, and to attend follow-up appointments to ensure proper healing.
In summary, seeing a small amount of blood in the eye discharge after retinal detachment surgery can be a normal occurrence as your eye heals. However, it is vital to remain vigilant and report any concerning changes to your healthcare provider. Your ophthalmologist is the best resource for addressing your specific concerns and ensuring that your recovery progresses smoothly.
