Can I get pregnant?
Hello doctor, I had my menstrual period from May 8 to May 14, but on May 14, I had intercourse with my boyfriend without a condom for a brief moment (about 2 or 3 times).
Before penetration, there was no pre-ejaculate fluid.
After that, we used condoms for all subsequent sexual activities.
Is there a chance of pregnancy? Thank you!
Shi, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2023/05/16
Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello, the questioner: There is a possibility of pregnancy even if ejaculation does not occur during intercourse, as pre-ejaculatory fluid may contain sperm.
Additionally, the failure rate of correctly using condoms throughout intercourse is still around 5%.
Therefore, it is generally not recommended to rely solely on condoms for contraception.
I suggest that if your period is one week late, you should take a urine test to check for pregnancy.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health.

It is understandable to have concerns about the possibility of pregnancy after engaging in unprotected intercourse during your menstrual period. To address your question, it is important to consider several factors regarding the menstrual cycle, ovulation, and the likelihood of conception.
Typically, a woman's menstrual cycle lasts about 28 days, but it can vary from 21 to 35 days. Ovulation usually occurs around the midpoint of the cycle, approximately 14 days before the start of the next period. Sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for up to five days, which means that if you have unprotected intercourse just before or during ovulation, there is a higher chance of becoming pregnant.
In your case, you mentioned that your menstrual period lasted from May 8 to May 14, and you had unprotected intercourse on May 14. Since this is the last day of your period, it is generally considered to be a low-risk time for pregnancy, especially if you have a typical 28-day cycle. However, if you have a shorter cycle, ovulation could occur sooner, which might increase the risk of pregnancy.
Regarding the specifics of your situation, you noted that there was no pre-ejaculate fluid (pre-cum) involved, which further reduces the likelihood of sperm being present during that encounter. Pre-ejaculate can contain sperm, but if there was no fluid released, the risk of pregnancy is significantly lower.
Additionally, since you mentioned that you used condoms for subsequent sexual encounters, this provides further protection against pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Condoms are an effective form of contraception when used correctly, and they significantly reduce the risk of unintended pregnancy.
While the chances of becoming pregnant from the encounter you described are low, it is not impossible. If you are concerned about the possibility of pregnancy, you may consider taking a home pregnancy test if your next period is late. Most home pregnancy tests are accurate when taken after a missed period.
In summary, while the likelihood of pregnancy from unprotected intercourse at the end of your menstrual period is low, it is not entirely impossible. If you have any further concerns or if your menstrual cycle is irregular, it may be beneficial to consult with a healthcare provider for personalized advice and guidance. They can provide you with more information about your menstrual cycle, ovulation, and contraceptive options to help you make informed decisions about your reproductive health.
