Post-operative medication issues after retinal laser surgery?
I discovered a retinal tear in my right eye last October and underwent laser photocoagulation on October 28.
I have been recovering well, with follow-up appointments every three months.
Recently, on May 17, I found a retinal tear in my left eye and had laser photocoagulation performed on May 18 at around 3 or 4 PM.
The doctor prescribed Flucason 0.1% (Fluorometholone 0.1%) eye drops in a 5ml bottle.
However, I was unable to find the eye drops in between, so I only started using them on May 20 at 3:24 PM.
1.
I would like to know if starting the eye drops one or two days late will have any impact on the healing of my eye after the laser treatment?
2.
I would also like to know if it is safe for me to go to the movies.
There is a particular film I really want to see, but I am unsure how long after the laser treatment I should wait before going.

After undergoing laser surgery for retinal tears, it is crucial to follow specific post-operative care guidelines to ensure optimal healing and prevent complications. Here are detailed answers to your questions regarding medication timing and activity guidelines:
1. Impact of Delayed Eye Drops: It is understandable that you experienced difficulty in obtaining your prescribed eye drops, Flucason (Fluorometholone 0.1%). While it is ideal to start using prescribed medications as soon as possible after surgery, a delay of one or two days in starting your eye drops is generally not expected to cause significant harm. However, it is essential to understand that these eye drops are typically prescribed to reduce inflammation and prevent complications such as infection. Delaying the use of these drops may slightly increase the risk of inflammation or discomfort, but it is unlikely to have a severe impact on your recovery. If you notice any unusual symptoms such as increased redness, pain, or vision changes, it is advisable to contact your eye care provider promptly.
2. Watching Movies Post-Surgery: Regarding your desire to watch a movie, it is generally safe to engage in activities like watching films after laser surgery, provided you feel comfortable and your doctor has not advised against it. Most patients can resume normal activities, including watching television or movies, within a few days after the procedure, as long as they do not experience significant discomfort or visual disturbances. However, it is essential to ensure that you are in a well-lit environment and take regular breaks to avoid eye strain. If you find that your eyes feel tired or strained during the movie, it is wise to take breaks and rest your eyes.
Additional Recommendations for Post-Laser Care:
- Medication Adherence: Continue to use your eye drops as prescribed, even if you started them later than recommended. Follow the dosage instructions carefully, and do not skip doses moving forward. If you have any concerns about the medication or its effects, consult your physician.
- Activity Restrictions: After laser surgery, it is generally advised to avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting, or any actions that may strain your eyes for at least a few weeks. This includes activities that require intense focus or could lead to eye strain, such as reading in poor light or using screens for prolonged periods without breaks.
- Follow-Up Appointments: Ensure you attend all scheduled follow-up appointments with your eye doctor. These visits are crucial for monitoring your recovery and addressing any potential complications early.
- Protective Measures: If you experience sensitivity to light after surgery, wearing sunglasses when outdoors can help protect your eyes and improve comfort.
- Signs of Complications: Be vigilant for any signs of complications, such as sudden changes in vision, increased pain, or persistent redness. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.
In summary, while a slight delay in starting your eye drops may not significantly impact your recovery, it is essential to adhere to your medication regimen moving forward. Engaging in activities like watching movies is generally permissible, but always listen to your body and take breaks as needed. If you have any further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for personalized advice.
