Erosion Tablet Issues
Hello Doctor: I have a problem with a duodenal ulcer, and the doctor prescribed me Emetrol.
However, after taking it, I have had to go to the bathroom several times, but it’s not diarrhea; it’s just a small amount of stool that has a slightly greenish color.
Is this normal? Thank you.
🙏

Dr. Lin Minghui reply Gastroenterology and Hepatology
The medication is a proton pump inhibitor, used for the treatment of gastric ulcers, duodenal ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and in combination with antibiotics for the treatment of Helicobacter pylori-related peptic ulcers.
Side effects may include diarrhea, characterized by increased frequency of bowel movements and softer stools.
Increased frequency of bowel movements with a greenish color may be a side effect of the medication, but it could also be a manifestation of the ulcer itself or possibly gastroenteritis.
A light diet and increased fluid intake are recommended, and it is important to monitor for any signs of gastrointestinal bleeding or ulcer bleeding.
If you experience dizziness, palpitations, or black stools, seek medical attention promptly.
Follow-up outpatient treatment is advised.
Wishing you good health!

When taking medications like Yiquai Tablets (which may contain ingredients aimed at treating gastrointestinal issues), it is not uncommon to experience changes in bowel movements. The gastrointestinal tract is sensitive to various medications, and side effects can manifest in different ways, including alterations in stool consistency, frequency, and color.
Yiquai Tablets are often prescribed for conditions like peptic ulcers, and they may work by reducing stomach acid or promoting healing in the gastrointestinal lining. However, any medication can lead to side effects, and gastrointestinal disturbances are among the most common. Here are some points to consider regarding your experience:
1. Bowel Movement Changes: It is not unusual to have changes in bowel habits when starting a new medication. This can include increased frequency of bowel movements, changes in stool color, and even the sensation of urgency. The fact that you are not experiencing diarrhea (which is characterized by loose, watery stools) is a positive sign. Instead, having small, colored stools may indicate that your body is reacting to the medication or that it is adjusting to the treatment.
2. Color of Stool: The greenish tint you mentioned could be due to several factors, including the food you are consuming, the medication itself, or even the bile produced by your liver. Bile is a digestive fluid that can impart a greenish color to stool, especially if it moves through the intestines quickly. If the stool is not accompanied by other symptoms like pain, fever, or significant discomfort, it is generally not a cause for concern.
3. Frequency of Bowel Movements: If you find yourself needing to go to the bathroom more frequently, this could be a result of the medication stimulating your digestive system. Some medications can increase gastrointestinal motility, leading to more frequent trips to the restroom. If this continues or worsens, it would be wise to consult your healthcare provider.
4. Monitoring Symptoms: It’s important to monitor your symptoms closely. If you experience any additional symptoms such as severe abdominal pain, persistent diarrhea, blood in your stool, or signs of dehydration (like dizziness or dry mouth), you should seek medical attention promptly. These could indicate a more serious reaction to the medication or an underlying condition that needs to be addressed.
5. Consulting Your Doctor: Since you have a history of duodenal ulcers, it is crucial to keep your healthcare provider informed about any new or unusual symptoms you experience while on Yiquai Tablets. They may want to adjust your dosage or consider alternative treatments if the side effects are bothersome or concerning.
In summary, while experiencing unusual bowel movements can be a normal response to new medications like Yiquai Tablets, it is essential to remain vigilant about your symptoms. If you have any concerns or if your symptoms change, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further evaluation and guidance. Your health and comfort are paramount, and your doctor can provide the best advice tailored to your specific situation.
