Persistent Lip Swelling After Accident: Seeking Effective Treatment Options - Dermatology

Share to:

Five years ago, I was in a car accident that caused swelling in my lower left lip, which has not gone down?

I had a car accident before and my left lower lip has not healed properly.
It feels like there is a lump inside my left lower lip, and when I smile, my mouth looks uneven.
Recently, I consulted a dermatology clinic that offers aesthetic treatments.
Initially, they administered anti-inflammatory injections, stating that I needed to feel a firm lump for the treatment to be effective.
After receiving two injections, I noticed no improvement (there is no firm lump in my lip).
I stopped seeking further advice, and the doctor mentioned that the only option left is to inject hyaluronic acid to swell the unaffected side to match the swollen side, as the originally swollen area cannot be reduced.
Is there any other method to reduce the swelling in my lip? Or which specialty should I consult? Thank you for your response.

Persistent lip swelling after an accident can be a frustrating and concerning issue. Based on your description, it seems that you have experienced significant swelling and possibly some form of tissue damage to your lower lip after the car accident. The fact that the swelling has not subsided and that you feel a lump or abnormality in the area suggests that there may be underlying factors that need to be addressed.

Firstly, it is essential to understand that swelling in the lip can result from various causes, including trauma, inflammation, or even the formation of a hematoma (a localized collection of blood outside of blood vessels). In your case, since the swelling has persisted for an extended period, it may be indicative of chronic inflammation or a more complex issue, such as scar tissue formation or a cyst.

The initial treatment you received, which included anti-inflammatory injections, was a reasonable approach to reduce inflammation and promote healing. However, if you did not notice any improvement, it may be necessary to explore other options. Here are some potential avenues for treatment:
1. Consultation with a Specialist: Since you have already seen a dermatologist, it might be beneficial to consult with an oral and maxillofacial surgeon or an otolaryngologist (ENT specialist). These specialists have expertise in conditions affecting the mouth and facial structures and can provide a more comprehensive evaluation of your lip swelling.

2. Imaging Studies: If not already done, imaging studies such as an ultrasound or MRI may be helpful to assess the underlying structures of the lip and surrounding tissues. These studies can help identify any abnormalities, such as cysts or other lesions, that may not be palpable during a physical examination.

3. Surgical Intervention: If there is a significant mass or cyst that is causing the swelling, surgical removal may be necessary. This procedure can help alleviate the swelling and restore the normal appearance of your lip.

4. Physical Therapy: In some cases, physical therapy or massage therapy may help reduce swelling and improve circulation in the affected area. A therapist experienced in facial treatments can provide techniques to promote healing.

5. Medication Adjustment: If you are currently taking any medications that may contribute to swelling, discussing these with your healthcare provider could be beneficial. Certain medications can cause fluid retention or allergic reactions that may exacerbate swelling.

6. Alternative Treatments: Some patients find relief through alternative treatments such as acupuncture or homeopathic remedies. While these should be approached with caution and discussed with your healthcare provider, they may provide additional options for managing symptoms.

7. Follow-Up Care: Regular follow-up with your healthcare provider is crucial to monitor the condition of your lip. If you notice any changes, such as increased pain, redness, or discharge, it is essential to seek medical attention promptly.

In summary, while the initial treatments you received were appropriate, the persistence of your symptoms indicates that further evaluation and possibly a different treatment approach may be necessary. Consulting with a specialist who can provide a thorough examination and recommend targeted interventions will be key to resolving your lip swelling and restoring your confidence in your appearance.
