Can I get pregnant?

Hello, doctor.
I have a question.
I am a virgin, and my last menstrual period started on May 18.
On May 26, I was taking a shower with my boyfriend, and I helped him with manual stimulation while standing.
He ejaculated on my chest and stomach, and a little bit flowed down to the area near my groin.
Shortly after, I rinsed my body with water, but I am a bit worried about the chances of becoming pregnant.

Meggy, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2023/05/30

The concern about the possibility of pregnancy from ejaculation on the body, particularly in the scenario you described, is understandable. To address your question directly: while it is theoretically possible for sperm to travel from the external genital area to the vagina, the likelihood of this resulting in pregnancy is very low.

When ejaculation occurs outside the vagina, such as on the abdomen or chest, the sperm must overcome several significant barriers to reach the egg. Sperm are motile, but they are not designed to swim long distances outside of the female reproductive tract. The journey from the abdomen to the vagina would require the sperm to navigate through various obstacles, including clothing, skin, and any fluids that may dilute or wash away the sperm. Additionally, sperm are highly sensitive to environmental conditions; exposure to air and water can significantly reduce their viability.

In your case, since you mentioned that you washed your body shortly after the ejaculation, this further decreases the chances of sperm being present in a viable state. The act of washing would likely remove most, if not all, of the sperm that may have been on your skin.

However, it is important to note that while the risk is low, it is not entirely zero. If any sperm were to come into contact with the vaginal opening, there is a theoretical chance of pregnancy, albeit very slim. The timing of your menstrual cycle also plays a crucial role in determining the likelihood of pregnancy. If you are not in your fertile window (which typically occurs around ovulation, approximately 14 days before your next expected period), the chances of conception are further reduced.

If you are concerned about the possibility of pregnancy, consider taking a home pregnancy test if your period is late. These tests are generally accurate and can provide peace of mind. Additionally, if you are sexually active and wish to avoid unintended pregnancies in the future, it may be beneficial to discuss contraceptive options with a healthcare provider. There are many effective methods available, including hormonal contraceptives, barrier methods, and long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs) like IUDs.

In summary, while the risk of pregnancy from ejaculation on the body is low, it is not impossible. If you have further concerns or questions about your reproductive health, it is always a good idea to consult with a healthcare professional who can provide personalized advice based on your specific situation.
