Itching in the genital area?

Hello doctor, for the past few days, I've been experiencing intense itching in my intimate area to the point where I feel like scratching at work.
😭 At home, I've scratched so much that I've come close to the anal area, and I've noticed some bumps that look like pimples.
I've even scratched to the point of bleeding (with a bloody smell).
Sometimes there's a burning sensation, but rinsing with water feels very soothing, and I want to rinse more (it helps relieve the itch).
However, there are no abnormal discharges (it's dry), and I have no sexual experience or partner (so it can't be caused by sexual activity).
Could this be related to poorly controlled blood sugar due to my type 2 diabetes? (My recent check-up showed higher levels.) I also have pets at home; could it be that I touched them without washing my hands and then touched that area, leading to an infection? This itching has become unbearable.
😭😭

More Info

Itchy genital areas can be a distressing and uncomfortable experience for many women. The symptoms you describe, including intense itching, the presence of small bumps that resemble pimples, and occasional bleeding from scratching, can be attributed to several potential causes. Understanding these causes is crucial for finding effective solutions.

Possible Causes of Itchy Genital Areas
1. Contact Dermatitis: This is a common cause of itching and can occur due to irritation from soaps, detergents, or personal care products. If you have recently changed any products, this could be a contributing factor.

2. Fungal Infections: Yeast infections, caused by an overgrowth of Candida, can lead to itching and discomfort. While you mentioned there are no unusual discharge symptoms, some women may experience mild dryness or irritation without the typical thick, white discharge associated with yeast infections.

3. Bacterial Infections: Bacterial vaginosis can also cause itching and discomfort, although it is often accompanied by a fishy odor and changes in discharge.

4. Skin Conditions: Conditions such as eczema or psoriasis can affect the genital area, leading to itching and irritation. These conditions can cause the skin to become inflamed and sensitive.

5. Hygiene Practices: Inadequate hygiene or excessive washing can disrupt the natural balance of bacteria and yeast in the genital area, leading to irritation and itching.

6. Diabetes: As you mentioned having type 2 diabetes, it is important to note that poorly controlled blood sugar levels can lead to increased susceptibility to infections, including yeast infections, which can cause itching.

7. Allergic Reactions: Allergies to materials such as latex (from condoms or gloves) or even pet dander can cause localized itching and irritation.

8. Insect Bites: Sometimes, insect bites in the genital area can lead to localized itching and swelling.

Recommendations for Relief
1. Avoid Irritants: Identify and eliminate any potential irritants in your hygiene products. Opt for unscented, hypoallergenic soaps and laundry detergents.

2. Maintain Hygiene: Keep the area clean and dry. Use mild soap and water to wash the area, and ensure it is thoroughly dried afterward.

3. Wear Loose Clothing: Tight clothing can exacerbate itching. Opt for loose-fitting, breathable cotton underwear to allow airflow and reduce irritation.

4. Avoid Scratching: While it may be tempting to scratch, this can lead to further irritation and potential infection. Consider using a cold compress to soothe the area.

5. Consult a Healthcare Provider: Given your symptoms and the presence of bumps, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider for a proper diagnosis. They may recommend antifungal or antibacterial treatments if an infection is suspected.

6. Monitor Blood Sugar Levels: Since you have type 2 diabetes, maintaining good blood sugar control is essential. High blood sugar can lead to increased risk of infections, so regular monitoring and management are crucial.

7. Pet Hygiene: If you suspect that your pets may be contributing to your symptoms, ensure that you wash your hands thoroughly after handling them and consider consulting a veterinarian for any potential allergies.

Conclusion
Itchy genital areas can arise from a variety of causes, and while some may be benign, others may require medical attention. Given your symptoms and existing health conditions, it is important to seek professional advice to ensure appropriate treatment and management. By addressing potential irritants, maintaining good hygiene, and consulting with a healthcare provider, you can find relief from your discomfort and improve your overall well-being.
